Armenia's Artillery Revolution: Indian Howitzers to Reshape Battlefield Capabilities

Armenia is undertaking a significant modernization of its artillery forces, a move prompted by losses sustained during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War.

This overhaul centers on the acquisition of two advanced Indian howitzers: the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) and the Multi-terrain Artillery Gun (MArG) 155mm / 39 cal – BR.

These systems will reshape Armenia's artillery capabilities, offering increased firepower, mobility, and technological advantages.

The Need for Modernization

Armenia's artillery corps has historically relied on aging Soviet-era systems like the D-20 and D-30 towed howitzers and their self-propelled Akatsiya and Gvozdika counterparts.

The 2020 conflict exposed the limitations of these weapons, with estimates suggesting Armenia lost hundreds of artillery pieces. This stark reality underscored the need for urgent modernization.

India's Solutions: ATAGS and MArG

  • ATAGS: This modern towed howitzer, designed to replace India's older FH77B guns, offers extended range, improved accuracy, and potentially faster rates of fire compared to Armenia's legacy systems.
  • MArG: The MArG's unique advantage lies in its wheeled 4x4 chassis, providing superior mobility in Armenia's challenging mountainous terrain. This maneuverability is critical for rapid deployment and redeployment, allowing Armenian forces to evade counter-battery fire.

India as a Partner

India's emergence as a significant arms exporter aligns with Armenia's need for advanced yet affordable weaponry. The reported 2023 agreement for 72 MArG units and 84 ATAGS highlights Armenia's commitment to this partnership and its drive to modernize its military.

Implications for Armenia's Defence

The integration of the ATAGS and MArG will significantly enhance Armenia's defensive capabilities. Their superior range, mobility, and potential for advanced fire control systems will give Armenian forces greater battlefield effectiveness.

This modernization sends a strong signal of Armenia's determination to strengthen its defense posture and deter future aggression.

Conclusion

Armenia's artillery modernization program marks a turning point in the country's military development. The introduction of Indian-developed howitzers promises to transform a vital component of Armenia's armed forces.

This move reflects both Armenia's strategic realignment and its commitment to ensuring a more robust and technologically advanced defense capability.

And Indian army and government is still thinking ...thinking and thinking...to induct these guns or not....Or Let First Pakistan get ahead of us...the we will do something.

It's great that they placed the orders because they placed it because it gave them a military advantage and they were happy with the quality and the technology. India should quickly finish the terms and price negotiations as quickly as possible so that they can start manufacturing those guns for us. India has a very good and wide variety of artillery guns along with a very good and fast manufacturing facility.

And Indian army and government is still thinking ...thinking and thinking...to induct these guns or not....Or Let First Pakistan get ahead of us...the we will do something.
Then there will be emergency procurements... Rabdi for every body..

U dont know diplomacy of war and diffence. If bharat buy any arm from other country first. They will sell it 3 times higher price to Bharat.

After 2 year same manufacturer will sale missiles to pakistan at 1/3 prize. So let buy pakistan first. Prove them we dont need those amunment. We have high skill engineers of world. Over people salary is 1/4 of international salary structure. If government put effort in right directin we will manufactre at cost 1/6 of the cost which we r getting from other country.

Also it will be additional source job. So dont ask to by ask to manufacture.

  6. killed infinite people now teach democracy.

Sell them some EW and 50mm truck mounted guns with built in radar as well.

Good test for the indian weapons platform as Azerbaijan would look to battle the Armenians once again in the future. Warcraft seems to be returning to the same artillery bombardment and infantry/armored assaults of WW1 in Europe. Artillery is king of battlefields.
