A Brazilian delegation is slated to visit India this month to discuss the potential acquisition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This move underscores the rising global interest in advanced defence systems, particularly in light of escalating geopolitical tensions.
The BrahMos missile, a product of an Indo-Russian joint venture, has captured the attention of multiple countries, including Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cuba, and Vietnam. Its supersonic speed, precision, and versatility make it a sought-after asset for nations seeking to enhance their air defence capabilities.
Brazil's interest in the BrahMos follows a series of high-level interactions between the two countries' military and government officials. In 2023, the Commander of the Brazilian Army witnessed a BrahMos firing demonstration in India, further solidifying their interest. Sources indicate that Brazil is also considering India's Akash missile system, demonstrating a broader interest in Indian defence technology.
The BrahMos has already made its mark on the international stage, with the Philippines becoming the first export customer in 2022. The $375 million deal for three batteries of the shore-based, anti-ship variant of the missile was seen as a significant boost to the Philippines' defence capabilities in the face of growing regional tensions.
Malaysia is also reportedly keen on the BrahMos' air-launched variant, while Vietnam is interested in a shore-based system similar to the one acquired by the Philippines. India's recent extension of $300 million in Lines of Credit to Vietnam for maritime security further underscores the growing defence cooperation between the two nations.
India's burgeoning defence exports, which reached a record ₹21,083 crore in FY24, are a testament to the country's growing prowess in the global arms market. The potential BrahMos deal with Brazil could further bolster India's position as a leading defence manufacturer and exporter.
The upcoming visit by the Brazilian delegation is expected to be a crucial step in solidifying this potential deal. As global conflicts continue to highlight the importance of robust air defence systems, the BrahMos missile is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for advanced defence technologies.
