Spanish shipbuilding giant Navantia has strongly emphasized that the S-80 Class submarine offered to India for Project-75(I) is not a watered-down export variant, but the exact same model deployed by the Spanish Navy. This claim aims to solidify Navantia's position in India's pursuit of advanced conventional submarines with next-generation capabilities.

The S-80 Class, currently in service with the Spanish Navy, represents a new generation of non-nuclear propulsion submarines, designed for extended missions and high-performance operations. Navantia explicitly stated that the platform offered to India will be equipped with all systems identical to those used by Spain, with no major subsystems omitted or downgraded.

This assurance is crucial, as export variants of military platforms are often stripped of sensitive technologies or advanced capabilities due to licensing restrictions or operational concerns. Navantia's offer underscores its commitment to providing India with a fully capable submarine to meet its operational and strategic needs.

India's Project-75(I) seeks to acquire six advanced conventional submarines with air-independent propulsion (AIP) under its Strategic Partnership Model. This initiative aims to boost domestic submarine manufacturing capabilities through collaboration with foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Navantia is one of the global OEMs shortlisted to partner with an Indian shipyard for the program. If selected, it will transfer technology and provide technical expertise to ensure the submarines are built domestically, aligning with India’s "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) vision.

Key Features of the S-80 Class Submarine

  • Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) System: The S-80 features a state-of-the-art AIP system, allowing it to remain submerged for extended periods. This capability significantly enhances stealth and endurance, crucial for India’s operational needs in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • High Operational Range: With a range of up to 8,000 nautical miles, the S-80 is well-suited for long-duration missions, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, and anti-ship or anti-submarine warfare.
  • Advanced Sonar and Combat Systems: The submarine is equipped with cutting-edge sonar and integrated combat management systems for enhanced situational awareness and combat effectiveness.
  • Payload and Versatility: The S-80 can carry a diverse range of weapons, including torpedoes and land-attack cruise missiles, offering flexibility for various mission profiles.
  • Crew Comfort and Automation: The submarine’s automation reduces crew workload, while its design prioritizes crew comfort during extended deployments.
By offering the undiluted S-80 Class submarine and committing to technology transfer and domestic production, Navantia presents a strong case for India's Project-75(I). This could significantly enhance India's underwater capabilities and contribute to its growing indigenous defence industry.

Spanish Submarine S80 plus is based on the Multi Million Dollar French Submarine that couldn't detect a 10,000 Rs fishing boat and collided, so we have to consider that during selection.

Just split the order with 6 equally between TKMS & Navantia that will add submarine Faster , Bharat need Subs very badly & Building subs are very Time consuming look at scorpene Follow-on 3 subs order it will b delivered in next decade & orignal 6 scorpene order how much time have been taken From 2005 to 2025 in an all in Two decades only 6 subs were added while for another 3 scorpene class will take another 7 years so over all 9 subs will take 3 decades

Again with that assertion of the Vagir not detecting the fishing boat. You do realise that it most definitely would have detected the boat, and that it was the fishing boat that did not alter course and collided, right?

Either provide evidence of your claims (which, if any, wouldn't have been found yet considering even the naval inquiry is ongoing), or simply don't make baseless statements until any such thing is known with certainty.

In sub history we found Even American nuke sub couldn't detect fishing boats and collided.... So it's not the point to reject it

How much tech transfer they are willing to do?. How many subsystems are imported by them and from which countries they are importing?

It's very heartening to note that there won't be any downgrading the capability.

However, can anyone let me know how to deal with repairs and maintenance since that might involve dependence on the presence of their engineers in India ( unless our engineers are trained and spares of all components are available)or even sending back the sub to Spain?

The fishing boat was supposed to have stealth coating, EW suit, 360 maneuvers, low heat signature?

France & now Spain? its like that the neighbor's wife slept with its neighbor & a new color, new shape, new physical figure child is born; What is this.. France, Spain, USA, UK Germany ..etc; all are giving us new stories & making us drool; as we ourselves on our own cannot do-achieve nothing;

Glad to see, companies are competing with each other and raising their bars to grab the order of Project-75(I).

India is definitely going ahead with the German submarines as their technology, equipment and capabilities are much better and reliable. The Spanish submarine uses a lot of foreign technology and parts which makes its maintenance, repairs or upgrades more complicated and expensive.
