In a clear sign of expanding reliance on domestic military manufacturing, Bengaluru-based small arms developer SSS Defence completed another scheduled supply of its G72 Submachine Guns (SMG) to the Punjab Police.
The event highlights an increasing trend among state-level law enforcement departments across India to adopt locally designed and manufactured small arms.
By transitioning away from foreign imports, these security forces are modernising their equipment with reliable, current-generation hardware built specifically for modern local security environments.
Designed for Close-Quarter and Urban Operations
The G72 submachine gun operates using the globally accepted 9×19mm NATO standard round. It is optimized for close-quarter battles (CQB) and high-density urban environments.
The weapon features a fast rate of fire, cyclic at roughly 900 to 950 rounds per minute.
To keep the firearm manageable during automatic fire, SSS Defence engineered it with a roller-delayed blowback operating system.
This mechanism drastically cuts down on felt recoil, ensuring better target tracking and accuracy for the operator.
High Modularity and Tactical Adaptability
The submachine gun is built around a fully modular frame designed to be adjusted according to changing tactical mission profiles.Key features of the G72 platform include:
- Configurable Layouts: Supports multiple interchangeable barrel lengths (including the standard 8.7-inch and ultra-compact versions) and features a side-folding stock that locks into place tightly.
- Ambidextrous Ergonomics: Controls and safety selectors are fully accessible from both sides, accommodating left and right-handed shooters seamlessly.
- Accessory Rails: Equipped with integrated Picatinny and M-LOK mounting systems on the handguard to attach sights, tactical lasers, vertical grips, and thermal optics.
- Stealth Integration: The barrel includes a threaded muzzle to allow for the immediate attachment of suppressors.
Direct Collaboration and Local Footprint
Company updates indicate that the latest delivery is the result of direct technical feedback and collaboration between active police personnel on the ground and the engineering teams at SSS Defence. This iterative development model ensures the hardware is refined to withstand the demanding conditions faced daily by the Punjab Police.
SSS Defence is securing a firm position within India's small arms production sector.
Recently, the G72 platform outpaced international suppliers to emerge as the lowest bidder (L1) for an incoming supply of 500 units to the National Security Guard (NSG).
This shift signals a gradual move away from historic foreign systems, such as the German Heckler & Koch MP5, which have traditionally dominated Indian tactical squads since the 1980s.
Beyond Punjab, state law enforcement agencies in Uttar Pradesh and other regions have started adding the G72 submachine gun variants alongside the manufacturer's M72 assault rifles and G72-P sidearms.
Driving National Self-Reliance
By designing, engineering, and mass-producing these weapons locally, the manufacturer directly advances the central government's Atmanirbhar Bharat directives.Arming defensive units like the Punjab Police with the G72 system simplifies baseline supply lines, as it relies on widely available 9mm ammunition.
It also gives regional forces cost-effective access to a highly customizable platform that can receive software or hardware updates quickly based on real-time field data.
As asymmetric threats continue to shift, local manufacturing pipelines ensure that Indian law enforcement retains immediate, uninterrupted access to top-tier tactical technology.
