Two battalions of the Assam Rifles (AR) are being relocated from Manipur to Jammu and Kashmir to bolster counter-terror operations in the Union Territory. This strategic move aims to optimize the deployment of security forces and enhance anti-terror efforts in the region.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), under the Home Ministry, will assume security responsibilities in the areas previously overseen by the two AR battalions in Manipur.

This change comes after a comprehensive review of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The remaining AR battalions in Manipur will continue their dual role of counter-insurgency and border guarding along the Indo-Myanmar border.

Assam Rifles: Sentinels of the Northeast

The Assam Rifles, known as the "Sentinels of the Northeast," is a paramilitary force under the administrative control of the Home Ministry and the operational control of the Indian Army.

With extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, the AR's deployment in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to significantly strengthen anti-terror activities.

Dispelling Misinformation

There have been allegations of bias against the AR in Manipur, but these claims have been refuted by former AR Director General, Lt. General PC Nair (retired), who termed them as "agenda-driven rumors."

The AR has maintained a neutral stance throughout the ethnic conflict in Manipur. The force is committed to fulfilling its duties professionally and can be deployed across the country based on security requirements.

New Leadership and Continued Dedication

Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera has recently taken charge as the new Director General of the Assam Rifles, bringing his extensive experience in counter-insurgency and counter-terror operations to the role.

The Assam Rifles continues to play a crucial role in maintaining security and stability in some of the most remote and underdeveloped areas of the country. Their commitment to protecting local communities and safeguarding national interests remains unwavering.
