Iran to Allow India Access to Detained Indian Ship Crew

Iran has agreed to allow Indian officials to meet with the 17 Indian nationals detained aboard a cargo ship seized near the Strait of Hormuz. This development comes amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, following recent cross-border attacks.

The agreement was reached during a phone call between India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Jaishankar expressed concern for the detained Indian crew members and urged their release from the Portuguese-flagged vessel, MSC Aries. Iran's Foreign Minister assured India that access to the crew would be granted soon.

The ship's seizure by Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) is reportedly linked to alleged connections with Israel. The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which owns the ship, is working with authorities to secure the well-being of the 25 crew members, including Indian nationals, and the vessel's release.

The diplomatic discussions also touched upon recent hostilities between Iran and Israel. Iran's Foreign Minister defended their recent missile and drone attacks on Israel as "legitimate defense" against Israeli aggression. He urged India to take a more active stance in condemning Israel through international bodies like the UN Security Council. India's External Affairs Minister emphasized the need for all sides to de-escalate tensions and work towards a peaceful resolution.

The fate of the detained Indian sailors remains uncertain amidst the volatile situation between Iran and Israel. India's diplomatic efforts highlight the delicate balancing act the nation faces in maintaining relations with both sides of the conflict.
