Resurgence of Pro-Khalistan Sentiment in Canada Sparks Concern

Recent events in Canada have ignited renewed diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, drawing attention to a resurgence of pro-Khalistan sentiment among sections of the Canadian Sikh community.

A Nagar Kirtan Parade in Toronto, organized by the Ontario Gurdwara Committee (OGC), and a previous event attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were both marked by separatist displays, inflammatory rhetoric, and provocative imagery.

Presence of Controversial Figures

The participation of figures such as Paramjit Mand of the Dal Khalsa and Avtar Singh Pannu, the latter designated a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency (NIA), raises particularly serious concerns.

Pannu, a member of the secessionist Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group, actively promotes the Khalistan movement, advocating for a referendum on the creation of an independent Sikh homeland.

Khalistan Movement: Background

The Khalistan movement is a separatist political campaign seeking to establish an independent Sikh state called Khalistan in the Punjab region straddling India and Pakistan.

This movement gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, leading to a period of violence and insurgency. While the movement has since waned in India, it retains a degree of support within diaspora communities in countries like Canada.

India's Diplomatic Response

India has repeatedly expressed its displeasure with Canada regarding what it perceives as a permissive attitude toward Khalistani extremism. Following the recent events, India lodged a strong protest with the Canadian government through the summoning of Canada's Deputy High Commissioner.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has condemned Canada for legitimizing extremist elements under the guise of free speech, warning that this tolerance could have negative repercussions for bilateral relations.

Concerns and Controversies

The presence of Khalistani slogans and the depiction of the Indian Prime Minister as imprisoned during a religious procession such as the Nagar Kirtan Parade raises serious questions about the intent to incite division and unrest.

Canada has historically been a safe haven for Sikh separatist activities, raising ongoing concerns from India.

While Canada upholds principles of freedom of expression, there remains a complex balance to maintain between the right to dissent and the need to curb ideologies that promote violence or threaten the sovereignty of another nation.

As long as Trudeau is PM, this will continue with the help of NDP. His days are numbered. Now he is building vote bank for future.

Soon they would realize that they have got too many khalistanis in their country so that they start demanding Khalistan in Canada. I am waiting for that day.
