Retired Major General Zahid Mahmood of the Pakistani Army has voiced concerns regarding the potential acquisition of F-35 Lightning II fighter jets by India from the United States.
In a recent interview with local media, he stated that this acquisition could significantly destabilize the regional strategic balance, particularly concerning Pakistan.
Maj Gen Mahmood suggested that the introduction of the F-35 into the Indian Air Force (IAF) could embolden India to pursue more aggressive military actions, specifically targeting Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
He argued that the advanced capabilities of the fifth-generation fighter jet would provide India with a considerable strategic advantage, potentially leading to increased tensions along the disputed borders. The F-35's advanced technology, including its stealth capabilities, could allow for more effective operations in contested airspace.
The retired general emphasized the necessity for Pakistan to re-evaluate its current strategic and tactical doctrines in light of this potential development. He noted that the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) would need to develop strategies to counter or deter potential F-35 incursions.
This could involve improvements to Pakistan's air defence systems, enhancements in electronic warfare capabilities, or the acquisition of advanced fighter aircraft from allies such as China. Strengthening existing partnerships and exploring new avenues for military cooperation could also be a key component of Pakistan's response.
Maj Gen Mahmood further highlighted the potential threat to Pakistan's operational security. He pointed out that the F-35's stealth technology would make Pakistani airspace more susceptible to surprise attacks and intelligence-gathering missions.
This vulnerability, he argued, necessitates a comprehensive review of Pakistan's defence posture and a proactive approach to mitigating the perceived risks associated with the F-35's deployment in the region.
