A young Pakistani man's ill-fated plan to elope with his girlfriend to India ended with his capture by the Border Security Force (BSF) and triggered a diplomatic incident between the two neighboring nations.
The incident unfolded in the Pakistani village of Akli, situated just 3km from the international border. The young man, identified as 20-year-old Jagsi, a resident of Akli Kharodi in Tharparkar district, entered his girlfriend's home under the cover of night with the intention of convincing her to flee with him to India. However, the girl refused his proposal, prompting a dramatic turn of events.
In a fit of despair, Jagsi snatched his girlfriend's scarf and threatened to hang himself from a nearby tree. However, the branch he chose gave way, causing him to fall. The commotion attracted the girl's family, who arrived and reportedly beat Jagsi before he managed to escape and make a run for the Indian border.
According to his statement to Indian authorities, Jagsi successfully breached the barbed wire fence near Barmer and ventured 15km into Indian territory, reaching the village of Jhadpa, where he was apprehended by the BSF on Sunday.
Upon his capture, Jagsi was found to be carrying a diary and a mobile phone. BSF sources disclosed that his movements had been tracked by surveillance cameras installed along the border fence, facilitating his capture through a coordinated search operation involving the BSF, local police, and villagers.
The BSF has since handed over Jagsi to the Sedwa police and lodged a strong protest with their Pakistani counterparts, the Rangers, during a flag meeting, denouncing the unauthorized entry of the Pakistani national into Indian territory.
