India is making strides in missile technology with the development of the BrahMos NG (New Generation) cruise missile. This lighter, more compact version of the BrahMos missile will offer the Indian Air Force (IAF) significantly enhanced capabilities.
Atul Dinkar Rane, Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace, recently confirmed the BrahMos NG program's progress.
Mid-2025 is the target date for critical drop and dummy tests, essential for assessing the missile's aerodynamic characteristics and its separation capabilities from the launch aircraft.
Upon successful completion of these unpowered tests, the BrahMos NG is anticipated to enter powered flight trials by the end of 2025. This accelerated timeline indicates the potential for the IAF to begin integrating the BrahMos NG into its fleet as early as 2026.
The BrahMos NG offers several key improvements over the legacy BrahMos missile. Its reduced size and weight provide greater flexibility, enabling it to be carried by a broader selection of fighter aircraft. This expands the IAF's options for deploying this powerful weapon.
Despite these changes, the BrahMos NG will retain the core capabilities of its predecessor – a 290-kilometer range and supersonic Mach 3.5 speed, ensuring the IAF can deliver precise, long-range strikes.
