Canada-India Trade Talks on Hold Despite Signs of Easing Tensions After Canadian Khalistani Killing

Talks between Canada and India on a potential free trade agreement remain stalled, with no clear timeframe for their resumption. This comes amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions following accusations by Canada against India regarding the Vancouver killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

However, signs suggest a potential thaw in relations. Canadian and Indian officials acknowledge a slight improvement in the bilateral relationship, which had been strained since September 2023. This followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s public accusation of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s death, which India vehemently denies.

Despite the improved tone, India remains unaware of any updates from Canada on the Nijjar investigation. Indian officials confirm ongoing discussions regarding the case, but no concrete progress has been reported.

The current situation leaves the future of the Canada-India trade talks uncertain. While a slight improvement in relations is encouraging, the Nijjar case continues to cast a shadow, hindering progress towards a potential free trade agreement.

Just close Bharat's embassy in canada & any visa issues let it be handled by US embassy.

No trade pact until he recants all accusations and apologizes to Prime Minister for creating a stink worse than a skunk.
They can eat all their products and it will be good for Indian farmers.

Why should there be any trade between these two countries at all. The dal (lentils) that we used to import from Canada to enrich people like Kamal Nath, Sharad Pawar, Sukhbir Badal etc. is no more. We are importing from Africa now.

The Indian Government needs to realize that a large part of the Sikh community is settled in Canada and they provide India with much needed money remittances sent by the Sikh community. Despite growing economy, India is still largely unproductive and dependent on global remittances. India should factor this into account when dealing with a strong leader like Justin Trudeau and give all details of their criminal activities in killing innocent Sikh Canadians like Nijjar.

No, India doesn't need Canada and Justin Trudeau is not a strong leader. Nijjar is not a innocent person, involved in all sorts of nefarious activities. Neither India is completely dependent on remittances from Canada nor it is unproductive. Don't portray wrong narratives in this platform.

Your absolutely delusional if you believe that. The Sikh community that is permanently settled there have no interest in what goes on in India or about creating a new Khalistan country that they would immediately leave their well paid jobs and home to immediately move back. Also most of those Sikh people have been brainwashed into believing that India is persecuting them. Also Trudeau isn't a strong leader at all because he is running a coalition government with a large support of Sikh MPs and without their support his government will collapse so his actions are selfish and self serving just to stay as PM and he's definitely going to lose the next election. Another point to note is that the Khalistan and SFJ are organisations that have been supported and created by the Pakistani ISI to create terrorists and to destabilise India in general with strikes, riots or protests.

As proof the question is that why does SFJ people only want to create Khalistan from Indian land? Why do they never claim a separate homeland from Pakistan Punjab?

India should sign an FTA with Mexico along with an investment and mobility agreement...Mexico can be leveraged for production, assembly and easy entry to the vast US market for goods and services...Mexico is key to cracking the US market and exporting there...Canada FTA should be put in cold-storage till they eliminate the Khalistani problem...In any case from Mexico, India can supply to entire North American market including Canada.
