European officials have disclosed that Chinese and Russian companies are jointly developing and testing a new attack drone, based on Iran's Shahed model. This revelation has raised serious concerns about China's involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine and its potential shift from its previously stated position of neutrality.

According to anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg, the collaboration began in 2023 and involves replicating the Iranian Shahed drone, a weapon extensively used by Russia against Ukraine. While Ukraine claims to have intercepted Iranian-style drones, the presence of Chinese-made drones in the conflict remains unconfirmed.

China's embassy in the US has vehemently denied the allegations, stating that the country does not provide weapons to any parties in the Ukrainian conflict and maintains strict controls on the export of dual-use items. However, Western officials have long expressed concerns about China's support for Russia, citing the provision of equipment and other forms of aid.

The development of the new drone, referred to as the "Sunflower 200" by Chinese defense sources, has further intensified these concerns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the presence of certain components, including those used in drones, which are shipped from both China and European countries.

This collaboration between China and Russia on developing attack drones has significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It raises questions about the potential for an escalation in violence and increased casualties. Western officials have warned China against providing lethal aid to Russia, emphasizing the potential consequences for the region and beyond.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with many expressing concerns about the impact of China's involvement in the war.
