The Indian Army's future tank arsenal is set for a significant boost. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is initiating a major project: the development of a cutting-edge 125mm smoothbore gun with an auto-loading mechanism. Intended for the Futuristic Main Battle Tank (FMBT), this weapon will usher in a new era of firepower, replacing the T-72's current armament.
This move from the Arjun tank's 120mm rifled design to a 125mm smoothbore system reflects worldwide preferences. Smoothbore guns offer advantages in ammunition versatility, allowing the use of APFSDS rounds and laser-guided missiles. They also boast increased projectile velocities for enhanced armor penetration. The addition of an auto-loader will streamline the firing process and enhance crew safety.
The DRDO will draw upon its success with the Arjun MBT's main gun in this endeavor. Integration of the latest smoothbore advancements is expected. Additionally, a focus on laser-guided missile compatibility could give the FMBT devastating long-range engagement capabilities. An upgraded SAMHO missile variant might even be tailored for the new gun, offering potent anti-armor solutions at closer ranges.
