The Indian Army and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are engaged in a fast-track initiative to create new long-range rocket systems.
These rockets, with potential ranges of 120 kilometers (74 miles) and 300 kilometers (186 miles), could undergo developmental trials as soon as 2025.
Rapid Development Prioritized
This project emphasizes swift development, with both programs designated as “fast-track mission mode." The urgency indicates a response to emerging strategic needs in the region. The Indian Army is seeking a new multi-caliber launcher system capable of firing a range of rockets. This would provide tactical flexibility, allowing the deployment of rockets from 122mm up to 300mm in caliber.
Leveraging DRDO Expertise
The DRDO's proven experience with the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system will play a key role in the development of this new capability. The Pinaka Dual Rocket system, incorporating both 122mm and 214mm launchers, highlights the organization's success in developing multi-caliber weapon systems.
Rocket Specifications
While plans may evolve, initial reports indicate the 120km rocket will be based on a 300mm caliber while the 300km variant will utilize a larger 370mm design. Larger calibers are necessary to deliver heavier payloads over greater distances. With the project still nascent, design and development work remains underway. The possibility of adjustments to these caliber specifications remains.
Crucial Trials Ahead
The next few years will be pivotal as the DRDO moves from blueprints to prototypes and commences developmental trials. This collaborative effort promises to significantly enhance India's land-based precision strike capabilities.
