The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has announced the launch of the fifth edition of its "Dare to Dream" innovation contest, a tribute to the legacy of former President and renowned scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. This year, the contest focuses on a critical challenge: developing a Compact Solid State based Active Denial System (ADS) for non-lethal crowd control.
Building on the success of previous editions, "Dare to Dream 5.0" aims to encourage innovators, startups, and researchers across India to contribute to advancements in defence technology. At the heart of this challenge lies the ADS, a non-lethal directed-energy weapon designed for crowd control by paramilitary and law enforcement agencies. Here's a breakdown of its key components:
- RF Power Source: The system utilizes an array of solid-state amplifiers operating at 95 GHz, generating a power density of 1W/cm² at distances of 25 or 50 meters. This high-frequency radio frequency (RF) beam is crucial for the system's effectiveness.
- Antenna & Radiating System: A precisely engineered antenna ensures accurate emission of the RF beam, dispersing energy over the target area without causing permanent harm.
- Human Machine Interface (HMI): The HMI provides operators with control over the system's output and safety protocols, ensuring responsible and ethical use of the RF beam.
- Mounting Options: Designed for versatility, the ADS can be mounted on drones for aerial deployment or vehicles for ground operations, adapting to diverse operational environments.
