Brazilian aerospace manufacturer, Embraer, is set to showcase the KC-390 Millennium tanker aircraft at Aero India 2025, aiming to strengthen India's air-to-air refueling capabilities. This strategic move underscores Embraer's commitment to deepening its defence collaboration with India and enhancing the operational efficiency of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The KC-390 Millennium, a multi-mission aircraft already in service with several air forces worldwide, is recognized for its versatility and performance. At Aero India, Embraer will highlight the aircraft's ability to significantly extend the range and endurance of India's air fleet. Equipped with underwing refueling pods, the KC-390 can refuel a variety of aircraft, including fighters and transport planes, acting as a crucial force multiplier.
“Embraer is excited to be back at Aero India as we showcase the KC-390 Millennium and our broad portfolio of defence and security solutions to the industry,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defence and Security. This statement emphasizes Embraer's interest in fostering partnerships that could lead to co-development and manufacturing opportunities in India.
The KC-390's impressive payload capacity of 26 tonnes places it strategically between the C-130J Super Hercules (20 tonnes) and the A-400M Atlas (37 tonnes). This, combined with its air-to-air refueling capabilities and ability to operate from short and unprepared runways, makes it a compelling option for the IAF, aligning with India's diverse operational needs.
Integrating the KC-390 into the IAF's fleet would not only bolster logistical support during peacetime operations but also significantly enhance its strategic reach in potential conflicts. Aerial refueling is crucial for extending mission durations, enabling fighter jets to reach distant targets, conduct prolonged surveillance, and engage in extended combat operations without frequent returns to base.
Aero India 2025, one of Asia's premier aerospace exhibitions held in Bangalore, provides a vital platform for international defence companies like Embraer to engage with the Indian defence establishment. Embraer's participation will showcase not only the KC-390 but also its broader defence portfolio, including surveillance aircraft, training solutions, and cybersecurity services.
