GE Aerospace, a global engine manufacturing firm, has announced the delivery of the fifth F404-IN20 jet engine to the Indian public sector company, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This engine is designated for the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A fighter jet program.
A GE Aerospace spokesperson confirmed the handover, noting, “GE Aerospace has handed over the fifth F404-IN20 engine against the order from 2021.” The spokesperson also emphasized the ongoing collaboration, stating, “GE Aerospace and HAL continue to work closely to ensure a clear line of sight of production schedules for the F404 engines.”
The delivery of the fifth engine follows the handover of the fourth F404-IN20 engine in October of this year, both against the order placed in 2021. This steady supply chain is vital for maintaining the production schedule of the domestic fighter jet program.
The engine deliveries would be from 2027 to 2032. The contract for 97 LCA Mk 1A was signed in September 2025.
Although GE had assured that all 99 engines and support services would be delivered by 2029, there has been an inordinate delay in delivery due to global supply chain disruptions. However, despite the delay, HAL, in November, sealed a mega deal with GE for the procurement of 113 jet engines for its Tejas light combat aircraft programme. Under this deal, the delivery of the F404-GE-IN20 engines will begin from 2027, and the supplies will have to be completed by 2032.
