India is set to bolster its defence capabilities with the impending acquisition of 31 MQ-9B Predator drones from the United States. The $3.9 billion deal is expected to be finalized next month, following approvals from the finance ministry and the Cabinet Committee on Security. This significant purchase will enhance India's surveillance and combat prowess, aligning with the nation's strategic defence objectives.

Notably, while the deal does not involve direct technology transfer, General Atomics, the drone manufacturer, will assemble the aircraft in India. Moreover, the company has committed to investing in the country and sourcing more than 30% of the drones' components from Indian companies, contributing to the growth of the domestic defence industry.

This collaboration extends beyond manufacturing. General Atomics will also partner with India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to share expertise in the development of indigenous high-altitude, long-endurance drones, fostering self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

The MQ-9B drones, with their extended flight duration and advanced weaponry, will be a valuable asset for India's armed forces. The Navy, Army, and Air Force will each receive a designated number of these drones, equipped with cutting-edge navigation and sensor systems, as well as a formidable arsenal of Hellfire missiles and precision-guided bombs.

India also intends to integrate domestically developed weapons onto these platforms in the future, showcasing the nation's commitment to indigenous defence capabilities.

I am reading articles that India is having second thoughts about acquiring these drones.
The reason being given is their vulnerability in contested air space.
Is there any truth to these rumours?
