How BEL's Upcoming 2000km+ Range "SASTRA" Radar Will Detect Stealth Aircraft and UAVs

India's defence capabilities are set for a major boost with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) developing the Long Range Radar (LRR), "SASTRA." This radar, with a range exceeding 2000 kilometers, is designed to detect and track both conventional and stealth aircraft, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), providing crucial early warning and situational awareness.

The SASTRA radar, originally a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) project, is now in its fabrication stage at BEL. Developmental trials are slated for the coming months, signaling a significant advancement towards its operational deployment. The radar's extended range and ability to detect low Radar Cross Section (RCS) platforms, including stealth aircraft, will significantly enhance India's air defence capabilities.

This development is particularly significant in light of the increasing use of stealth technology in modern warfare. By detecting and tracking such elusive threats, SASTRA will enable timely countermeasures, effectively protecting India's airspace.

Reports suggest that SASTRA is likely a derivative of the Long Range Radar developed by DRDO for India's Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) program. This connection highlights the radar's potential to monitor not just aerial threats but also ballistic missiles, adding another layer of defence to India's security architecture.

The development of the SASTRA radar marks a significant step forward in India's strategy to strengthen its air defence network. The radar's impressive range and capabilities will play a key role in securing India's airspace against potential adversaries, underscoring the nation's commitment to safeguarding its borders.

The next step for DRDO would be to make these radars mobile. It will be challenging, but it will give serious advantage for us if we are able to make this.

Our first priority now should be
  1. FAB glide bombs
  2. ATACMS type ballistic missile
These hyper costly mostly useless radars can wait for some time..these radars are not urgent..

What bands L/S/X or all 3 combined as a long range tri band discrimination radar for beyond the horizon capability? We also need space based VLEO/leo constellation over IOR for real time tracking/ targeting/sensors/pnt/ communications with radars/SARs in multiple bands for ground/sea/air/subsurface information…

BEL has some very capable engineers for a PSU. I hope SASTRA further evolves into a very potent multi-use radar.

What a good news to start a day with?
Long range radar with 2,000 kms range and over the horizon detection and tracking of targets, and of course stealth targets too is of immense help in getting ready against threats.
Remember the ballistic missiles from terroristan/jehadistan does not give India more than 10 minutes from launch to interceptions.

It will surely make Indian airspace safe against two enemies.

Great accomplishments DRDO and BEL, congratulations, way to go!!!

Radars are made mobile when needed. Fixed radars are made cause.

1) Big power source, need lot of diesel and auxiliaries.
2) Too big radar.
3) Wide coverage, like this case
4) Some AD are fixed at site like BMD, Airbase AD.

I am aware of this. I am also aware of layered defense. But with modern battlefield becoming more and more mobile and mobility is the name of game to increase survivability. Static targets are more easily targeted by use of variety of weapons. Options can be explored to make system more compact is my POV.

India needs modern radars that can detect even small drones from a long distance. India needs to install our radars

Once these RADARS become operational , this would vastly enhance Indian AD capabilities to a very high level. Infact it can to a great extent fill the gap until IAF inducts AWACS / AEWS.
Atleast 3 such RADARS are required to start with.

Radars with ranges of over 4000, 6000 kms must be planned conceived and produced within next 5 to 10 years to match the world powers and global standards .

It's only announced now.. India is way ahead in radars and missiles for some time.
We are just playing like the west announcement are done when the next generation is ready. Check my article told you in 2010 1500+ 2014 1700+ &2016 2500 range.
I am off loading too much as too little today. We are the baap of a lot will declare in action soon watch next 2 years BHARAT with weapons world has not seen Just 2 years and we will display a lot
