Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari has called for a significant ramp-up in the production of the indigenously developed Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft (LCA).

This move aims to fulfill the air force's growing requirements and capitalize on potential export opportunities. Chaudhari suggested that the defense and aerospace industry could play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

"The issue is matching production capacity with our requirements," Chaudhari stated at a media briefing, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The IAF chief's comments come amidst concerns about the slow progress of the LCA Mk-1A program and its potential impact on the air force's combat readiness.

To expedite production, Chaudhari proposed the diversification of manufacturing through multiple production lines. He suggested various models like public-private partnerships or joint ventures, urging Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to take the lead in this endeavor.

HAL has already established a new production line in Nashik, aiming to increase annual output from 16 to 24 LCA Mk-1As. The defense ministry is also considering an additional order of 97 LCA Mk-1As, further emphasizing the aircraft's strategic importance.

The LCA is poised to become a cornerstone of the IAF's combat capabilities in the coming years, with projections of around 350 LCAs of various variants in operation.

The aircraft's performance in the recent Tarang Shakti exercise has further solidified its reputation. However, concerns persist about HAL's ability to meet delivery timelines, particularly due to delays in engine supply. Despite these challenges, there are signs of progress, with GE Aerospace indicating increased engine deliveries.

In addition to meeting domestic demand, HAL is actively pursuing export opportunities for the LCA and other aircraft. The company is planning a new vertical dedicated to exports, showcasing its ambition to expand its global footprint.

The IAF chief's call for diversified production aligns with these ambitions, highlighting the potential for the LCA to not only bolster India's air power but also contribute to its defense exports.

Till GE-404 engine arrive HAL should upgrade Tejas MK-I fighters up to 1A standards and deploy them to Rajasthan and Gujrat Sector !
