IAF Remains Committed to AMCA, Not Considering Su-57 Based FGFA Revival

Former Indian Air Force (IAF) Marshal Anil Chopra's recent suggestion to revisit the Sukhoi/HAL Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program has ignited discussions within the defence community. However, credible sources within the industry have confirmed that there are no plans to reconsider the FGFA program for procurement.

Experts reiterate that India's decision to withdraw from the FGFA program, which was based on the Russian Su-57 platform, was justified due to significant technical shortcomings. The FGFA reportedly failed to meet several critical requirements, exhibiting deficiencies not expected in a fifth-generation fighter aircraft.

The program's escalating costs were another major deterrent. Developing a two-seater FGFA variant could have potentially doubled the per-unit cost compared to the Su-30MKI, which is estimated to be around $70 million.

Moreover, customizing the FGFA for India's specific needs was projected to require an investment of $5 billion, significantly exceeding the $2 billion allocated for the recently approved Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program.

While India did incur sunk costs during the initial stages of the FGFA program, experts believe that these expenses are relatively minor compared to the potential financial burden of continuing a program that might not have met the IAF's operational requirements.

The Indian aerospace industry's focus is now firmly on the indigenous AMCA program. With a development budget of $2 billion, the AMCA represents a more cost-effective and strategically independent path for the IAF's future fighter fleet.

Very well could be, if it is true, a variant of SU-57 with all the latest indian/Israeli gadgets would be nice, we can’t wait for another 20+ years for AMCA, we should have some 5th gen jets before piggy’s get them, we can make AMCA as 6th or 6+ gen jet, if we have sufficient tech at that time later on.

India may buy atleast 2 to 3 sqadron of Su-57 , AMCA has decade to b combat ready and become mature platform

FGFA means not buying 2-3 squadron, it is replacement for AMCA.
Not actually replacement Once Russia Inducts Su-57 , India may show interest India need some Tech For AMCA. so buying some sqadron .In MRFA some are not willing to share ToT & setting up plant with each & every component of Eco-system ,then who ever meet the demand may offered the contract. Mark My word. India may see Either Rafale or Su-57.Dassault failed to meet India may have AMCA & Su-57 or AMCA & Rafale. But AMCA project will happen.

FGFA means Fifth Gen Fighter Aircraft, this was originally supposed to be our 5th Gen aircraft before ADA drew a picture and called it AMCA, so reviving means this will be our 5th gen Aircraft and AMCA might become 6th or 7th gen in 20-30 years time frame if pursued, if not it will will hang as a picture in ADA walls for ever.

Instead of going for FGFA we should invite Lockheed Martin as tech consultant for AMCA program to reduce gestation period !

I think it was a very prophetic decision for the IAF and India to abandon the PAF-FA project back in 2018 as things have only gotten worse for that project and the Russians in general. One way or other,Russians lacked precise manufacturing and metallurgical sophistication required for very low stealth jet, sufficiently powerful yet efficient/low visibility engine and it's associated nozzels/inlets and of course the latest avionics and weaponry that needs to accompany a Sleath fighter. Not to mention, even if that design was matured enough and production went ahead,I doubt that the Russians would be able support their Felon fleet smoothly with appropriate spares and maintenance support let alone and Indian Su-57 fleet.
Besides it's complete absence from the war in Ukraine only points to its many shortcomings and lack of faith by the Russians in their own design.

Better to get RD33-MKOVT Sea Wasp engines for MIG29UPG final upgardes and also, to use same engines for MK2 and twin engines NON-CANARD MK3 Tejas jets designs...

You tube videos saying that Rafale F4.2 is having same stealth RCS as SU57....

AMCA= cost effective but we wasted many time fielding a working prototype and still waiting for it until now...
FGFA aka Su57= abit expensive but is now a working sh!ts and it's prototype are being use to improve it's incremental upgrade to# destroy some Ukrainian asset's.... Sadly Russian is diverting a new standard for testing a future 6gen system that they a promoting for mig41😹😹😹... News from Russian Orc's that they successfully develop a working new gen engine with a serrated /flat nozzle that can be use in su75 or mig41....

welp we need to wait and see first the future of AMCA if it'll be a flop or aye😹😹😹we already wasted time waiting for it whenever IAF is changing it's initial specs without any working prototype that ballooning it's developmental phase.... It's like we didn't even left FGFA because it's becoming expensive 🙃🤭

AMCA 6gen would be impossible, just join a already group or develop a different AMCA that is not from 5gen project

As i have repeatedly told, Su57 will show in IAF...mark my words....that AMCA dream will have to wait for at least a decade.
Its obvious, IAF went for Rafales waiting for LCAMK2, and will again get for a 5th gen fighter waiting for AMCA to fully develop.....and the only other 5th gen that IAF will be offered in 5 yrs from now will be F-35.....and we all know that F-35 is a multirole fighter like Rafale and not an air superiority fighter like Su-30...so my intuition is that SU-57 will fly with Indianized avionics....lets wait and watch

My enthusiasm on AMCA neverending specs revision is now on very low state😹😹😹...
i would rather go on working aircraft than waiting decades of promises

Indian-Govt & Military should consider to cancel MRFA & instead invest in:-
(1) Additional 18 Rafale jets for IAF
(2) At least 24 Rafale jets for IN

At the same time, encourage IAF & IN to form a JV to invest in:-
(1) TEDBF (ORCA)
(2) AMCA

That's the only logical option available as rest of the option are way too costly & won't be able to support long term logistical synergy & Economy of Scales.

Su-57 with Israeli Tech will be force to reckon. Too bad that it failed to impress IAF.
