India and Malaysia talks on Collaboration on MRO of Su-30MKM

In a significant stride towards enhancing bilateral defense cooperation, the Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, articulated the shared vision of both nations during the India-Malaysia Defence Industrial Cooperation event. The symposium, held on Thursday (Feb 22), served as a platform for fruitful discussions on mutual interests and potential areas of collaboration. Notably, the event witnessed the participation of Defense Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Isham Ishak, underscoring the official commitment to fostering robust ties in defense and security domains.

During the symposium, High Commissioner Reddy highlighted the depth of the Indo-Malaysian relationship, emphasizing the strategic importance of forging stronger defense partnerships. His remarks echoed the sentiments of cooperation and mutual understanding that underpin the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his address, Secretary-General Isham expressed Malaysia’s openness to exploring collaborative opportunities with India, particularly in cybersecurity and the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector. He underscored the significance of leveraging India’s expertise, especially in areas related to the Scorpene submarine and Sukhoi Su-30 MRCA.

The proposition to collaborate on cybersecurity reflects the evolving nature of modern warfare, where cyber threats pose formidable challenges to national security. By pooling resources and expertise, India and Malaysia can bolster their cyber defense capabilities, enhancing resilience against emerging threats in the digital domain.

Furthermore, the focus on the MRO sector, specifically concerning the Scorpene submarine and Sukhoi Su-30 MRCA, signifies a strategic alignment of interests between the two nations. India’s proven track record in manufacturing and maintenance makes it a valuable partner for Malaysia as it seeks to optimize the operational readiness of its defense assets.

The Scorpene submarine, a cornerstone of Malaysia’s naval defense, stands to benefit from India’s technical proficiency and experience in submarine operations. Collaborative efforts in MRO activities can streamline maintenance procedures, ensuring the sustained performance and longevity of critical defense equipment.

Similarly, the Sukhoi Su-30 MRCA, a versatile fighter aircraft, presents opportunities for knowledge exchange and skill transfer between India and Malaysia. By harnessing India’s capabilities in aircraft maintenance and support services, Malaysia can enhance the operational effectiveness of its air force fleet.

Secretary-General Isham’s commitment to prioritizing equipment readiness underscores Malaysia’s unwavering dedication to maintaining a state of operational readiness. In an ever-changing security landscape, readiness is paramount, and collaboration with India affirms Malaysia’s proactive approach to safeguarding its national interests.

As both nations embark on a journey of closer defense cooperation, it is imperative to nurture trust, transparency, and mutual respect. Through dialogue, joint exercises, and technology sharing initiatives, India and Malaysia can build resilient defense architectures that contribute to regional stability and prosperity.

Don't share important technology with Malaysia. They will pass every detail to Pakistan. Malaysia, Turkey are not reliable country and in emergency situation they will backstab India for their brother Pakistan

Why is India so desperate to hook up with a country that has proved inimical to India? As the largest operator of the Su-30 fleet outside Russia, clearly India has specific advantages. Also, as Scorpene submarines operator, India has the largest number. So why is India desperate to collaborate with such a country? If they want, they can approach India to maintain their fleet at India itself. Whats the need for India to share anything vital with Malaysia??

True that. Things are fishy in MoD with so much of Love for Mullah specific Nations in Asia & Africa recently & that too ones which are inimical to India

What is there to share ? MRO stands for Maintenance, repair and overhaul . And India stands to earn money.

India definitely has some interests, Malaysia and Indonesia are near the Malacca straits which the Chinese vessels generally opt for. Both Malaysia and Indonesia are having problems with the Chinese. So enemy's enemy becomes an preferred ally.

Share means technology and setup to maintain, repair and overhaul. Everything should be done in India and not in Malaysia

There is nothing so confidentia about it. and India has nothing to loose because the entire process will be executed by HAL . The aircraft belongs to RMAF not IAF .

Malaysians are of Chinese and Pakistani origin, their forefathers migrated to Malaysia decades back. They dislike Indians and do not socialize with Indians. It would be foolish to partner, collaborate with or share any MRO knowledge with them. We can do business with them, they may utilise our existing MRO facility in India.

I just hope India does not surrender more than what it gets in return. Both the mentioned countries are fishy and suspect and will not think twice before turning against India!

This would be an ideal time for India to supply any spares, parts and fix any problems with any country that uses the Sukhoi 30 or other Mig jets. HAL should take this opportunity to use our MRO facilities to modernise or make any changes or upgrades to any Sukhoi or Mig jets that other countries have. This will increase HALs business opportunity as Russia faces sanctions and it makes it difficult for Russia to carry out these tasks as they used to before the war and now Russia would be focusing more on their own jets which are in heavy use already.

The entire mro will be done in india as seting a fecility for a small no in Malaysia is not economical. They have already limited su-30 operations and grounded mig29 operations. India too will be pitching the upgrades to su-30 in the future. All export by any country will be different from what they use ie export variants.

You might be right, but they might not align with China, it will go against their sovereign integrity. In case of muslim countries they won't go against them but we don't require them in those scenarios.
