India Eyes Used Mirage 2000 Jets from Qatar Amid Fighter Shortage

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is exploring the acquisition of 12 pre-owned Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from Qatar to address a growing shortage in its fighter squadrons. A team of IAF officials is expected to visit Qatar in the coming weeks to evaluate the aircraft.

The potential deal includes nine single-seat Mirage 2000-5EDA variants and three twin-seat Mirage 2000-5DDA trainers, along with spare engines, testing equipment, and MICA air-to-air missiles. Initial reports suggest the Qatari jets have approximately 30-35% of their airframe life remaining, which could translate to roughly 10 years of operational service. This aligns with India's plan to phase out its existing Mirage 2000-5 fleet by 2035.

There is some discrepancy in the reported price of the jets. Times Now has stated that Qatar is offering the aircraft for approximately ₹500 crore (US$6.7 million) each. However, older reports from Reuters indicate that Qatar may be seeking a total of $795.14 million for the entire fleet, equating to US$66.25 million per aircraft. This significant price difference raises questions about the financial viability of the deal.

Acquiring the Qatari Mirage 2000s could provide temporary relief for the IAF, which is currently operating with 31 fighter squadrons instead of the sanctioned 40. The Mirage 2000 has a proven track record in the IAF, having been deployed in the Kargil War and more recently in the Balakot airstrike. The fact that India already operates a fleet of Mirage 2000s would simplify the integration of these additional aircraft.

Reports suggest that Pakistan may also be interested in the Qatari Mirage jets. This could necessitate a swift decision from India if the aircraft are deemed suitable, as Pakistan has a history of competing with India for military acquisitions.

India is also considering an offer from Greece for 18 older Mirage 2000s, primarily for spare parts. Additionally, discussions are underway for the potential joint purchase of Rafale fighter jets with Greece, which could result in cost savings and expedited delivery.

The acquisition of used Mirage 2000s, whether from Qatar or Greece, presents a potential solution to the IAF's fighter jet shortage. However, the final decision will likely depend on several factors, including the actual cost of the aircraft, their remaining operational life, and potential competition from Pakistan.
