India Invests ₹200 Crore in Green Hydrogen Valleys Across Kerala, Pune, Bhubaneswar, and Jodhpur

The Indian government, through the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has allocated ₹50 crore (approximately $6 million USD) each to four ambitious green hydrogen valley projects.

These projects, located in Kerala, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, and Jodhpur, aim to boost India's green hydrogen production capacity and promote clean energy solutions.

Project Details and Focus Areas

  • Kerala HVIC: Will focus on generating hydrogen from biomass and electrolysis, primarily targeting the marine and roadway mobility sectors.
  • Bhubaneswar HVIC: Will also utilize electrolysis for hydrogen production, catering to the steel and mobility sectors.
  • Pune HVIC: Will employ bioethanol and electrolysis for hydrogen production, aiming at the fine chemicals and mobility industries.
  • Jodhpur HVIC: Will utilize both biomass and electrolysis to produce hydrogen, with applications in internal combustion engines, city gas blending, and ammonia production.

These initiatives will be managed by a newly established Section 8 company to ensure their operational sustainability beyond the initial five-year funding period. The projects were selected under Mission Innovation, a global initiative involving 23 countries and the European Commission, focused on accelerating clean energy research and development.

This funding approval aligns with India's ambitious goal of generating 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen capacity by 2030. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, is considered a key component in decarbonizing various sectors, including transportation, industry, and energy.

These hydrogen valley projects are expected to enhance research, innovation, and capacity building among scientific and industrial stakeholders, demonstrating the viability of clean hydrogen solutions for local, regional, and national implementation.
