In a recent interview, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the India-Middle-East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a potential "game changer" on par with the historic Silk Route. The project, agreed upon during India's G20 presidency last year, aims to strengthen trade and connectivity between India, the Middle East, and Europe.
PM Modi also highlighted his success in bringing about a consensus G20 declaration despite differences over the Ukraine-Russia conflict. He emphasized India's positive role in the IMEC, citing support from Gulf countries, the US, and Europe. The project was a focus during the G20, where Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US President Joe Biden met on the sidelines.
PM Modi underscored India's efforts to showcase its diversity during the G20 by holding events across the country. He defended India's democratic credentials, noting its vibrant democratic practices in contrast to some Western media concerns about a backslide under his leadership.
The Prime Minister also emphasized India's commitment to its "Neighborhood First" policy with proactive regional support, as evidenced by aid to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis and earthquake relief provided to Nepal. However, he acknowledged that internal political considerations within a few neighboring countries have complicated ties with India.
PM Modi's statement affirms India's rising influence as it seeks to create new economic partnerships and strengthen its diplomatic standing globally.
