In a major advancement for India's defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Indian Navy, successfully conducted a test launch of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
The missile was launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
The VL-SRSAM, an indigenously developed air defence system, is designed to intercept and neutralize a variety of aerial threats, including aircraft and drones.
This sophisticated missile features advanced technology, such as a solid propellant rocket motor and a highly maneuverable flight control system, enabling it to engage high-speed targets with precision.
During the test, the VL-SRSAM was fired from a land-based vertical launcher and successfully tracked and engaged a low-flying, high-speed aerial target, simulating an aircraft.
The missile's flight path and performance parameters were closely monitored by a network of tracking instruments, including radar, electro-optical tracking systems, and telemetry, deployed by the ITR.
This successful test launch not only validated various updated weapon system elements, including the proximity fuse and seeker, but also demonstrated the missile's accuracy and reliability.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO, the Indian Navy, and all teams involved in the successful flight test, highlighting the high degree of reliability of the VL-SRSAM weapon system.
Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO also congratulated the teams, stating that the VL-SRSAM will significantly enhance the Indian Navy's air defence capabilities and contribute to the country's overall defence preparedness.
The development of the VL-SRSAM represents a significant milestone for India's defence industry and reinforces the nation's commitment to self-reliance in critical defence technologies. The successful demonstration of this missile further solidifies India's position as a rising power in the realm of defence innovation.
