India has showcased its growing prowess in aerospace technology with the unveiling of a full-scale model of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) at Aero India 2025. This marks the first public appearance of India's domestically developed fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, signifying a major leap towards self-sufficiency in defence technology.
Developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), the AMCA is a twin-engine, multi-role fighter designed to meet the future needs of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Weighing in at 25 tons, the AMCA is positioned to be a leading aircraft in its class.
The ADA has incorporated state-of-the-art technologies into the AMCA, including an AI-powered Electronic Pilot to aid in complex decision-making, Netcentric Warfare Systems for enhanced battlefield coordination, an Internal Weapon Bay to minimize radar signature, and Integrated Vehicle Health Management for predictive maintenance.
One of the most notable features of the AMCA is its extensive use of artificial intelligence. The AI-powered Electronic Pilot is designed to enhance situational awareness, automatically identify potential threats, assist pilots in complex combat scenarios, and seamlessly coordinate with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
These advanced capabilities aim to give the AMCA a significant edge over existing fifth-generation fighters, placing India among the world's top developers of next-generation air combat technology.
Aero India 2025 is also witnessing significant international participation. The United States has a strong presence, showcasing a variety of advanced aircraft and defence technologies.
Over two dozen American exhibitors are present at the event, engaging with Indian counterparts to explore potential collaborations in aviation and defence. A high-level US delegation, including US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Jorgan Andrews and General Kevin Schneider, Commander of the US Pacific Air Forces, is leading these efforts.
The US-India defence partnership has strengthened considerably since Aero India 2023, with increased trade, technology innovation, and cooperation in areas like cybersecurity, logistics, and maritime security. General Schneider highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, "Aero India 2025 is an ideal forum to showcase US defence aircraft and equipment and ultimately contribute towards our compatibility and interoperability with other nations."
Visitors to Aero India 2025 can view a display of cutting-edge US defence technology, including F-16 and F-35 fighter jets, the KC-135 Stratotanker, and the B-1 bomber.
In addition to the defence technology on display, the United States Air Force Band of the Pacific's ensemble, Final Approach, will be performing for the public at Aero India on February 13 and 14, with an additional performance at Christ University in Bengaluru, adding a cultural dimension to the event.
