Indian Army Explores Shotguns as Close-Combat Anti-Drone Solution

The Indian Army's Southern Command recently showcased its adaptability and innovation during its annual field firing exercise by demonstrating the potential use of shotguns as a close-combat anti-drone weapon system.

This unconventional approach has gained traction in recent years, notably in the Ukraine conflict where Russian forces have increasingly employed shotguns to counter the threat of small, agile fixed-wing drones.

The shotgun's effectiveness in close quarters, coupled with its affordability and user-friendliness, makes it an attractive option for anti-drone operations. The Indian Army's exploration of this tactic underscores its commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats and evolving technologies in modern warfare.

As drone technology continues to advance, the use of shotguns and other unconventional weapons is likely to become more prevalent in military strategies, showcasing the dynamic nature of contemporary combat and the need for constant innovation in defense capabilities.

Shotgun is only useful at very close ranges. It’s better to use the remote machine gun which would be more accurate and travel further to intercept the drone from a safe distance.

Well firstly, there isn't really no real remote controlled machine guns on current in service tanks besides the commander's mounted DSHK. Secondly, you wouldn't even be able to hit the drones even if it was flying towards your barrel because its so small and manuverable maybe a solid 20% of you hitting it if that perticular situation played out, and we are talking about huge multi-purpose drones like the MQ9 reaper or Bayraktar drones, we're talking about cheap domestic fpv drones thats like the size of your palm with enough payload to be considered a flying landmine. Simply, shotguns are the most effective last line of defense against drones because a skilled drone operator will be able to dodge and fly inside an open tank's hatch and detonate its payload inside the tank.
