The Indian Army is taking steps to bolster its anti-tank capabilities with the issuance of a Request for Information (RFI) for new-generation Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs). This procurement initiative signals India's commitment to modernizing its armed forces and addressing the evolving landscape of armored threats in the region.

The RFI outlines the Indian Army's requirements for a highly advanced ATGM system capable of neutralizing modern armored vehicles, including Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). This acquisition is crucial for maintaining a strategic advantage in potential conflicts.

The RFI represents the initial phase of the procurement process. After evaluating responses from potential vendors, the Indian Army will likely issue a Request for Proposal (RFP), inviting detailed bids. The final selection will be based on a comprehensive assessment of factors such as performance, cost-effectiveness, and compatibility with existing weapon systems.

The desired ATGM system is expected to possess the following key attributes:
  • Advanced Guidance Systems: Both Lock-On-Before-Launch (LOBL) and Lock-On-After-Launch (LOAL) capabilities for enhanced target engagement flexibility.
  • Caliber: 110-155mm to ensure sufficient destructive power.
  • Weight: Less than 30 kg (including the complete system) for increased portability and ease of deployment.
  • Extended Range: A maximum range exceeding 4,000 meters to engage targets at a safe distance.
  • Minimum Range: 200 meters for effective engagement in close-quarters combat.
  • High Penetration: The ability to penetrate over 800 mm of Rolled Homogeneous Armor (RHAe), even with Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA), to defeat heavily armored targets.
  • Versatile Deployment: Suitable for both tripod-mounted and vehicle-mounted platforms to adapt to various operational scenarios.
  • Dual Fire Modes: Top-attack and direct-attack capabilities to provide operational flexibility against different target types and battlefield conditions.
