Indian Army Seeks Domestic 125mm APFSDS Ammo Production to Upgrade T-72/T-90 Firepower

In a move to enhance its indigenous defence capabilities, the Indian Army has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the domestic production of advanced 125mm Armour Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) ammunition. This development is seen as a significant step towards bolstering the firepower of its T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks, which form the backbone of the country's armored regiments.

The RFI specifically highlights the requirement for ammunition with superior Depth of Penetration (DoP) capabilities. This is crucial in the modern battlefield where adversaries are equipped with advanced armored vehicles featuring sophisticated protection systems.

By promoting the local production of this critical munition, the Indian Army aims to reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers, thereby strengthening the nation's self-reliance in defence manufacturing. This initiative aligns with the government's ambitious 'Make in India' program, which encourages domestic industries to participate actively in the defence sector.

The RFI signifies a clear intent on the part of the Indian Army to modernize its arsenal while simultaneously supporting the indigenous defensc sector. This strategic move is expected to have a far-reaching impact on India's defence preparedness and its position in the global defence landscape.

Thanks IA 👍👍 for opting for pirticular indegenious ammunition after 77 yrs.

if these work against british tanks, its a milestone...
For all hype about american and russian thanks, british crooks have the best armor.

This is something that the private sector can easily manufacture from the APFSDS developed by DRDO. DRDO should transfer the technology and just receive a usual 5% royalty fee as even then it will cost the private sector less to manufacture the shells in large quantities.

Great idea as it is very expensive ammunition to procure from foreign countries.
India needs it badly.

Glad someone finally woke up and realized that the standard Mango cr@p we're using wouldn't dent a modern tank much. Better than getting found out when it matters as usual.

Transfer of technology from Americans for rounds with 700-900 mm penetration power be sought and the shells then manufactured in India in a public private enterprises.
