India's Agni-Prime Missile Passes Nighttime Test Launch

BALASORE, Odisha – India has bolstered its strategic capabilities with the successful nighttime test launch of the Agni-Prime, a new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile.

The test, carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the elite strategic forces command, took place from Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on Wednesday night.

The Agni-Prime, boasting a strike range between 1,000 and 2,000 km, underwent its first pre-induction night launch. This test is viewed as a significant milestone, validating the missile's reliability and accuracy and paving the way for its potential induction into India's armed forces.

Prior to this launch, India had issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) for the area, indicating a planned test within the timeframe of 6 pm to 9 pm. While the DRDO did not officially confirm the launch, the news was corroborated by Hemant Kumar Rout, an Odisha-based journalist for the Indian Express.

The Agni-Prime represents a crucial addition to India's missile arsenal, strengthening the nation's strategic deterrence capabilities. Its development and successful testing highlight India's continuing advancements in indigenous defence technologies.

It is good think that 20 year old missiles are being replaced with a modern system.

What will the fate be of Prithvi missiles? Will they be scrapped and the class of missiles will go extinct in India?

Agni P is medium range ballistic missile whereas Prithvi is short range. Prithvi has 3 variants (Prithvi I-150 km range, Prithvi II-350 km and Prithvi III-750 km)

Prithvi I will replaced by Prahaar (150-200 km, under development) while Prithvi II will be replaced by Pralay (150-500 km, on order)

Agni P is different altogether and will replace Agni I.

I know that Agni P will replace Agni 1 and 2, and that they are different class than Prithvi.

My question regarding Prithvi was because it is obsolete, because you can launch rockets and cruise missiles at that range easily. Modern ballistic missiles have minimum 1000km range.

You mentioned prahaar, it has been sidelined for this reason exactly and focus is now on pralay which is longer range. I think entire prithvi class will be removed. Pralay will be our go to tactical ballistic missile in future, with Agni-P being nuclear role at that range.

This is critically necessary as we need to update and upgrade our old missiles. We need them lighter, smaller and flexible in its flight path to avoid any SAM interception.

This modern missile will be a solid addition in our missile arsenal..
Great job team👍👍 Now induction must be quick & in good numbers

Good, but Bharat quickly needs long range hypersonic glide vehicles and air breathing cruise missiles…The HGV should be able to strike anywhere in the world and the hypersonic cruise missile of at least 2500kms range, at high mach speeds in excess of mach 10, with ability to launch from ground, sea, submarines and bomber platforms…India should also think about building stealth bombers like B-21s, for global strike….These capabilities are expensive but SSNs/SSGNs and stealth bombers both with long range hypersonic cruise missiles are game changing capabilities on our journey to great power status…these will take 10-15 years to field once we decide…another option would be to lease B-1Bs and B-2s about 12, from the US provided they agree and we are okay with strings attached…
