India's Armored Vehicles to Gain Next-Gen Situational Awareness with DRDO's BSAS

DRDO's CVRDE Unveils Cutting-Edge Battlefield Awareness System for Armored Vehicles

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) continues its commitment to modernizing the nation's armed forces. One crucial focus is enhancing the combat capabilities of India's armored regiments.

The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), a leading DRDO laboratory, is at the forefront of this effort with the development of a Battlefield Situational Awareness System (BSAS). This project falls under the broader initiative of "Advanced Vetronics for Futuristic AFVs."

Understanding Situational Awareness

The BSAS aims to fundamentally improve the awareness of armored vehicle crews in the chaotic and fast-paced modern battlefield. Situational awareness is the ability to perceive, understand, and project the status of elements within a battlespace.

For armored vehicle crews, this means having a real-time understanding of friendly and enemy troop positions, identifying immediate threats, and analyzing terrain features to plan optimal routes. Superior situational awareness leads to better decision-making, increasing both effectiveness and survivability.

Technological Backbone of the BSAS

The BSAS is a complex technological system. At its core lies a powerful tactical computer that will process information from an array of sources.

A sophisticated Graphical User Interface (HMI), adhering to Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standards, will present this vital information to the crew in a clear, accessible manner. GVA compatibility ensures integration across India's wider military technology infrastructure.

Precise navigation is paramount in complex combat scenarios. The BSAS will couple inertial sensors, vehicle odometers, and a multi-constellation GNSS receiver (supporting both NavIC and GPS/GAGAN). This combination maximizes location accuracy and keeps vehicles on track even in GPS-denied environments.

Smooth coordination within the armored vehicle is enabled by an integrated communication system, compatible with both modern software-defined radios (SDRs) and legacy equipment.

Impact and Implications

The BSAS stands to revolutionize how Indian armored units operate. Access to real-time, comprehensive information affords crews a decisive edge, empowering them to act with more speed and confidence. Improved threat awareness can directly contribute to saving lives.

On a broader scale, commanders will benefit from their units' enhanced awareness, allowing them to make more informed tactical decisions.

The development of the BSAS showcases India's growing technological prowess in the defence sector. This project underscores the DRDO's dedication to providing India's armed forces with the very best in battlefield technology, ensuring they remain a potent and effective force.

why dont we have an aps yet??
APS is overrated. It protects against rpg and atgm, that too not against high angle top attack systems. Israeli tanks are still getting blown up in gaza. I have not heard of a single case of APS protecting israeli tanks successfully in gaza.

Anyways, primary threat to tanks today is artillery and loiterimg munitions which aps is not designed for.

Great Idea. Situational awareness should be top priority. Only if you can see enemy, can you fire at them or run away

This will help in protecting our tanks to an extent but our main problem lies in execution of whatever plans we make.

This is now a critical necessity and we need to install it on all of our tanks and IFV. We need to build up our net centric warfare capabilities which will allow better planning, tactics or latest intelligence to any threats or danger they spot through the BSAS system.

I have no faith in DRDO. Unless they present a technology, can't trust them. They just demand budgets. DRDO must focus on missiles and stop wasting money on Tanks, Rifles, Machine Guns, ammunition etc.

My proposal for DRDO is upgrade the T72/T90 with complete Make in India parts and work with AVNL to export it. Russia is finished and there are 10,000 of these tanks, BMP1/2, BTR lying around. DRDO's beat is Russian equipment and modernizing it with Indian made engines, transmission etc and export it.

Let private Industry take over all future projects for our Military.

Great Idea. This will help our army in the battlefield. This is advanced Technology that developed by DRDO.
