ISRO's RLV Nears Final Test, Gaganyaan Crew Module Drop Delayed

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to conduct the third and final landing experiment of its Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) prototype, RLV-LEX-03, as early as next week.

The test, pending favorable weather conditions, will be conducted at the Aeronautical Test Range in Challakere. This crucial step aims to refine the RLV's landing capabilities before attempting orbital re-entry.

RLV-LEX-03: A Leap Forward

S Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, highlighted the advanced nature of RLV-LEX-03. The experiment will introduce an intentional cross-range error of 500m, significantly larger than the 150m deviation tested in RLV-LEX-02.

Additionally, the landing approach angle has been modified, and a more sophisticated guidance algorithm will be utilized to correct errors in both longitudinal and lateral planes.

Modifications to the main landing gear aim to achieve a softer touchdown, while a new smoke marker system will allow for detailed trajectory analysis. The test will also evaluate the performance of ISRO's real-time kinematics system in a high-speed environment.

Gaganyaan Air-Drop Test on Hold

Meanwhile, at the Sriharikota spaceport, the Integrated Air-Drop Test (IADT) of a simulated Gaganyaan crew module has been delayed. The test, using an Indian Air Force Chinook helicopter, aims to validate the parachute system for India's first human spaceflight mission.

Sources indicate that during pre-mission trials, potential issues with the Chinook helicopter were identified. The IAF is currently investigating the matter. ISRO plans to conduct multiple IADTs, with the final number depending on the test results.

This delay comes amidst ISRO's preparations for at least one uncrewed mission and a second test vehicle mission to test various abort conditions as part of the Gaganyaan program this year.
