J&K Reinforces Security Ahead of Amarnath Yatra Amidst Terrorism Concerns

Jammu and Kashmir authorities have implemented a comprehensive security plan ahead of the 52-day Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, commencing on June 29th.

This heightened security response comes in the wake of a surge in terrorist activity in the Jammu region this year, including a June 9th attack that killed nine pilgrims and injured 33 others.

Kashmir Valley on High Alert

Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, V.K. Birdi, convened a high-level meeting to finalize a coordinated security strategy. Officials are instructed to maintain a vigilant 24-hour surveillance along highways and conduct regular patrols. Robust nighttime security measures are also in place to prevent any potential threats.

To ensure a structured and secure movement of pilgrims, the administration is establishing designated routes and cut-off timings for vehicular and foot travel. Mock drills are being conducted to assess security preparedness and identify areas for improvement. Srinagar officials are evaluating high-density counter-operation plans to guarantee comprehensive security coverage and timely response to any incidents.

Additionally, authorities are instructed to monitor anti-national elements and potential terrorist associates, gathering actionable intelligence to preemptively address threats. Surveillance cameras are being installed at strategic locations throughout the region.

Jammu Division Security Heightened

The Jammu division, which has witnessed four major terrorist attacks this month, is also undergoing intensified security measures. A special drill and searches were conducted around the base camp in the Bhagwati Nagar area, and an identification drive was carried out for residents.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Dr. Vinod Kumar, confirmed the implementation of a three-tier security system for the base camp. Area domination, particularly along the highway, has been increased, and all border points are under surveillance. Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) have been formed, and high-rise buildings are being secured as part of area domination efforts. The Bhagwati Nagar camp will be under constant monitoring through 360-degree cameras.

Additional Security Forces Deployed

To further bolster security measures for the pilgrimage, additional security forces have been deployed throughout Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the Baltal base camp and emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among administration, police, security forces, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and smooth management of the yatra.

The authorities are committed to ensuring a safe and secure pilgrimage experience for all devotees, despite the recent challenges posed by increased terrorist activity.
