Kalyani Group Unveils Plans for Made-in-India Naval Guns

The Kalyani Group, a well-established player in the Indian defense industry, is extending its expertise into the maritime domain with a bold initiative to design and develop a suite of indigenous naval guns.

This project, undertaken through the government-funded Make-I category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, directly supports India's long-term goal of reducing reliance on foreign-sourced weaponry.

Filling a Critical Capability Gap

Seeking to bolster the Indian Navy's capabilities, Kalyani Group is developing three distinct naval guns:
  • 127mm Gun: This large-caliber weapon system is intended to equip India's major warships, providing significant firepower for surface engagements, shore bombardment, and anti-air defense.
  • 76mm Gun: Designed for medium-sized vessels, this versatile gun offers a balance of firepower and flexibility, making it suitable for various roles including anti-surface warfare, anti-air defense, and close-in support.
  • 30mm Gun: Aimed at smaller warships and patrol craft, this rapid-fire gun provides critical close-in defense against fast-moving air and surface threats.

The Drive for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'

The Kalyani Group's efforts are squarely in line with the Indian government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative within the defense sector.

By developing naval guns domestically, India can reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers, fostering technological self-sufficiency and boosting its defense industrial base.

Potential Benefits for the Indian Navy

Indigenously developed naval guns promise a range of operational enhancements for the Indian Navy:
  • Tailored Solutions: Naval guns designed in India can be specifically customized to meet the unique requirements and operating environments faced by the Indian Navy.
  • Technological Control: Domestic development grants India greater control over technical specifications, upgrades, and the integration of these weapon systems into its platforms.
  • Logistical Simplification: Indigenous supply chains simplify maintenance, spare part acquisition, and reduce the risk of disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions or sanctions.

Leveraging Expertise in Land-Based Artillery

The Kalyani Group's established track record in designing and manufacturing advanced artillery systems for land forces gives it a solid foundation for this new venture.

This experience in barrel design, recoil systems, and fire control mechanisms is directly transferrable to the development of naval guns.

Conclusion

The Kalyani Group's ambitious foray into naval gun development has the potential to significantly strengthen the Indian Navy's arsenal. If successful, this project will not only enhance the Navy's combat capabilities but also contribute to India's vision of becoming a self-reliant defense manufacturing powerhouse.

Excellent news. A 5" gun and a bunch of 3" guns would be excellent for a lot of our warships. On the other hand, the 30mm gun seems a bit off. Most nations use either a 25mm or a 40mm gun, so I feel a 40mm gun would be better placed, although we do use a lot of Russian-origin 30mm guns as of now.

Indian BHEL is already building some of these naval guns.
Fierce competition would not hurt in getting quality, reliable and cost-effective naval guns.

I want Adani to do something like this in everything he is trying to sell to India.
Not stamping foreign maal.

Exactly, we need our top tier of buisness tycoons to step up and share the burden of taking India to the next level. Tata,Birla, Adani,Ambani, Kalyani ,Jindal,Mittal etc... must use their expertise and power to make India self reliant and a manufacturing hub .

Excellent.. with IN involved, sure the project will be conclusive...

Firstly the government needs to open up the bigger platforms. Look at how multiple players are coming up when offered funds and orders for FICV. The whole point of private sector/capitalism is profit. So we need to give them the profits, and they will do what’s needed.

BHEL manufactures the OTO Melara 3" gun under license, and it is a weapon system we have fully indigenised. That is, we can build a 3" gun from scratch without any imported subsystems (though at a slightly higher cost). Atleast that is what a BHEL conference call from 2016 says.

As for Kalyani working on this, why not? However, they should focus on a 5" gun and a 30mm or 40mm gun first. The 3" gun we have is already exceptional in it's role. Let's get a 5" gun, and then work on a 3" gun.

Kalyani will do all the hard work but 56 Hijras friend Adani will reap all profit by scree driving iz real phoren maal
