Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is poised to receive a significant order for 100 more K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers from the Indian Ministry of Defense (MoD). This follows the successful delivery of an initial 100 units in 2021, a project valued at ₹4,500 crore that showcased India's growing indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities.
The K-9 Vajra, a collaborative effort between L&T and South Korean defense firm Hanwha Defense, has proven its effectiveness within the Indian Army. This 155mm/52 calibre artillery gun, mounted on a tracked chassis, offers high mobility, a long range, and a rapid rate of fire, making it a valuable asset in modern warfare.
Arun T Ramchandani, Senior Vice President of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems IC, confirmed that negotiations for the repeat order are in their final stages. While the final contract value remains undisclosed, it is anticipated to exceed the previous order due to inflation and currency fluctuations.
The indigenous production of the K-9 Vajra at L&T's Armoured Systems Complex (ASC) in Hazira has significantly bolstered India's self-reliance in defence, reducing its dependence on foreign suppliers.
This potential order underscores the Indian Army's confidence in the K-9 Vajra's capabilities. The howitzer's advanced features, combined with its local production, make it a crucial component of India's artillery modernization efforts.
