Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading Indian engineering and construction firm, has been awarded a crucial role to build the hulls and assist in systems integration for two cutting-edge nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam.

This landmark project, recently approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) with an estimated budget of Rs 45,000 crore, signifies a major leap forward for India's naval capabilities and its drive for self-reliance in defence production.

Building upon its successful experience in constructing the hull for India's Arihant-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), L&T emerges as a crucial player in the Next-Generation Nuclear Attack Submarine (SSN) program. As the only Indian private sector company with proven expertise in this complex domain, L&T will play a pivotal role in realizing this ambitious undertaking.

Unlike SSBNs, which primarily serve as a nuclear deterrent, SSNs are designed for offensive operations. These versatile vessels are capable of hunting enemy submarines and surface ships, conducting surveillance, and providing support to carrier strike groups. The development of these next-generation SSNs represents a key component of India's long-term naval modernization strategy, aimed at bolstering its underwater warfare capabilities in the face of growing maritime challenges.

L&T will collaborate closely with the Indian Navy and the DRDO throughout the construction process. Utilizing advanced 3D modeling and product data management software, L&T's submarine design center will ensure precise simulation and fabrication of the submarine's structure and systems based on designs provided by the Navy and DRDO.

Furthermore, L&T's involvement extends beyond hull construction to encompass the intricate integration of systems and technologies essential for nuclear-powered submarines. This includes the complex nuclear propulsion systems, demanding a high degree of stealth, precision, and durability. L&T's technical expertise will be instrumental in ensuring the success of this strategically vital defence project.

While drawing upon valuable experience gained from the Arihant-class project, L&T will now focus on the unique requirements of SSNs. These submarines prioritize high-speed maneuverability and extended deployments for offensive operations in the open sea, demanding a different set of design and engineering considerations compared to the stealthy, long-endurance focus of SSBNs.

The acquisition of these advanced SSNs will significantly enhance India's ability to project power in the Indian Ocean region and beyond. Their stealth and strike capabilities will act as a deterrent to potential adversaries, ensuring a robust underwater presence to safeguard India's maritime interests.
