In a major boost to India’s air defense and self-reliance, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved a Rs 7,000 crore deal for the procurement of close-in weapon systems from Indian defense giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T). This includes the ambitious “Made in India” Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) project, based on the company’s advanced Sudarshan SHORAD system.
The Sudarshan SHORAD is a state-of-the-art Short-Range Air Defence System (SHORAD) designed and developed by L&T Defence. It boasts:
- 3D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar: This provides 360-degree surveillance coverage, enabling early detection and tracking of aerial threats.
- Sophisticated threat identification: The system can accurately identify and classify incoming drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft.
- Effective engagement: The CIWS is designed to neutralize these threats effectively, protecting critical assets and installations.
- Multi-Platform System:The Sudarshan SHORAD system comprises three key elements:
- Tracking Radar and Command & Control Unit: Provides situational awareness and coordinates defense actions.
- Fire Control Radar: Accurately tracks and targets incoming threats.
- Firing Unit: Delivers precise firepower to neutralize threats.
