The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently finalized contracts with RRP S4E, a prominent provider of optical and thermal imaging equipment, to enhance the surveillance capabilities of the Indian Army.

The deals, valued at $11.6 million, will provide the army with advanced long-range cameras and thermal imaging sights, improving operational effectiveness in both day and night conditions.

The Viraj 28-B camera is a cutting-edge long-range observation system. Weighing less than 9 kg, it combines a day camera with a thermal imaging sensor. The day camera boasts Full High-Definition (HD) 1080p resolution, offering a 30x optical zoom and 16x digital zoom for detailed observation.

Its integrated thermal imaging sensor, with a resolution of 640×480p and 6x optical zoom, enables effective target acquisition in low-visibility or nighttime scenarios. The Viraj 28-B can detect a person at distances up to 4 km, recognize them at 1.3 km, and identify them at 678 meters.

Designed specifically for night vision, the PR82 thermal imaging sight features a 12-micron 640×480p thermal sensor and an OLED display with 800×600p resolution.

With a 3x optical and 4x digital zoom, this lightweight device (approximately 875 grams) offers impressive performance, capable of detecting a person at distances up to 2 km, recognizing them at 900 meters, and identifying them at 500 meters.

The PR82 is designed to be compatible with a variety of rifles currently used by the Indian Army, including the AK-47, INSAS, SIG716, and Tavor TAR-21, thereby enhancing the precision of night operations.

RRP S4E is expected to complete the delivery of both the Viraj 28-B cameras and PR82 thermal imaging sights to the Indian Army by April of this year. This rapid delivery schedule will ensure that these vital technologies are quickly integrated into the army's operational framework, bolstering their preparedness and capabilities in the field.

This procurement aligns with the Indian Army's ongoing modernization efforts and its focus on enhancing situational awareness and operational effectiveness across diverse terrains and conditions.
