Pakistan's Air Force is facing a significant setback as its fleet of F-16 fighter jets risks being grounded due to the country's ongoing economic difficulties.

The Mirage Rebuild Factory (MRF), responsible for maintaining these American-made aircraft, has warned of a looming crisis due to an overdue payment of $682,000 to the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. This non-payment has already resulted in the suspension of essential spare parts delivery, jeopardizing the fleet's operational readiness.

The F-16s are crucial for Pakistan's air defence, as demonstrated during the aerial engagement with India following the Balakot airstrike. Pakistan acquired these jets in the early 1980s, with subsequent purchases and upgrades through the FMS program. To ensure their proper use and maintenance, an American technical security team oversees the aircraft at Pakistani air bases.

In 2022, the US provided $450 million in aid to upgrade Pakistan's F-16 fleet, a move opposed by India. This aid was seen as a strategic gesture by the US amidst strained relations.

This situation reflects broader issues within Pakistan's military and economic policies. The outcome will significantly impact Pakistan's defence readiness and its standing in the region. The country's ability to navigate its complex relationships with the US, China, and Russia will also be tested as it seeks solutions to maintain its air force capabilities.
