PMC and IAF Initiate Survey to Identify Unauthorized Structures Near Lohegaon Air Force Station

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) have launched a joint survey to identify and assess unauthorized structures within a 100-meter radius of the bomb dumping area at Lohegaon Air Force Station (AFS). The initiative aims to address potential safety and security concerns arising from the proximity of these structures to a critical military installation.

Rohidas Gavane, Executive Engineer of PMC's building permission department, stated that the survey will encompass detailed information on each structure, including carpet area and plinth details. A pilot survey has already identified 60 structures within the designated zone.

Lohegaon AFS is a strategically important air base for the IAF, housing numerous fighter aircraft. The presence of unauthorized constructions in the vicinity has raised concerns regarding potential risks to both the base's operations and the safety of residents in the surrounding areas.

In May, PMC and Lohegaon AFS officials held discussions regarding the issue of unauthorized buildings in Lohegaon and Dhanori. The authorities have now sought permission from the Air Headquarters and South Western Air Command to utilize drones for a comprehensive survey of the area.

The joint survey reflects a collaborative effort between the PMC and the IAF to ensure the safety and security of both the air base and its surrounding communities. By identifying and addressing unauthorized structures, the initiative aims to mitigate potential risks and maintain the operational integrity of Lohegaon AFS.

Additional information from open sources indicates that the survey is part of a broader effort to address unauthorized constructions near defence installations across India. The Ministry of Defence has expressed concerns about the issue and has directed local authorities to take necessary action.

The outcome of the survey in Pune is expected to inform future decisions regarding the management of unauthorized structures near Lohegaon AFS. It may also serve as a model for similar initiatives in other areas facing similar challenges.
