Russia Developing the Latest Su-57 'M1' Felon Variant...

Russia is developing another modern variant of its 5th generation Su-57 Felon program aimed at addressing the existing shortcomings. Dubbed as the Su-57M1 it is being presented as a future variant of Russia's Su-57 stealth fighter, incorporating the new Izdeliye 30 engine (also designated AL-51 F1), a redesigned airframe for better aerodynamics and reduced radar signature, and AI-assisted systems.

The "M1" designation denotes and suggests a modernized, definitive version with enhancements like superior supercruise capability, enhanced lift, and a flatter engine nozzle for improved stealth and maneuverability.

Key Features of the Su-57M1:

1. Improved Izdeliye 30 Engine (AL-51 F1):

This new engine provides more thrust and better efficiency than the current AL-41F1 engines, enabling supercruise performance.

2. Redesigned Airframe:

The fuselage is wider to improve lift and stability, and the aircraft uses composite materials to reduce weight and enhance stealth by lowering its radar cross-section.

3. Stealth Enhancements:

A key feature is the introduction of redesigned flat engine nozzles, which help reduce the aircraft's infrared signature and improve its overall stealth.

4. Improved Aerodynamics:

The overall aerodynamic improvements contribute to better fuel efficiency and an extended operational range.

5. AI-Assisted Systems:

The "M1" variant also includes AI-assisted systems, showcasing the integration of artificial intelligence into its capabilities.

6. Missiles:

The new M1 features the integration of new & lighter izdeliye-810 missile which has been custom-built for the M1 with a reduced length & 25% reduction in weight as compared to the R-37M earlier with aBVR range of 300 km and a hypersonic speed of Mach 6-7. It will allow the izdeliye-810 to be carried in the internal weapons bay on the M1, unlike the Su-57's E variant.

Significance of the Su-57M1:

The Su-57M1 represents Russia's commitment to advancing its aerospace industry and developing a true fifth-generation fighter.

It aims to address limitations of the earlier Su-57 models, particularly in the areas of engine performance & stealth, bringing it in line with its Western counterparts.

This variant offers a glimpse into the future of the Russian Air Force's capabilities, with enhanced performance & advanced technology.

The Komsomolsk-on-Amur production facility located in Russia is setting-up additional assembly lines for the production of the M1 variant which is scheduled to be rolled out & inducted by the Russian forces from 2026...

India, if interested, could consider & evaluate this M1 variant to probably order a couple of squadrons as an interim solution for a 5th gen fighter for IAF until the AMCA becomes available in 2035...
