Kochi, India – A Russian Navy detachment, featuring the advanced diesel-electric submarine Ufa and the rescue tug Alatau, arrived in Kochi on October 21st for a scheduled port visit. This visit highlights the robust and enduring maritime cooperation between India and Russia.
The Ufa, a Project 636.3 class submarine (also known as the improved Kilo-class), is the fourth in its series commissioned by the Russian Pacific Fleet.
Launched in 2019 and inducted into service in 2022, the Ufa boasts enhanced combat capabilities, including advanced acoustic stealth, an extended target acquisition range, and a powerful torpedo missile armament. These features place the Project 636.3 submarines among the most formidable non-nuclear submarines globally.
The Indian Navy extended a warm welcome to the Russian vessels. PRO Defence Kochi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized the visit as a "symbol of the unshakable friendship between India and Russia," demonstrating the strength of their ongoing maritime collaboration.
During their stay in Kochi, the Russian delegation will engage in discussions with India's Southern Naval Command, participate in friendly sports competitions, and replenish supplies. This visit provides a valuable opportunity for both nations to share expertise and knowledge in submarine operations, further strengthening their naval partnership.
This port call reflects the broader, longstanding defence cooperation between India and Russia, guided by the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC).
This cooperation extends beyond naval exercises and encompasses various joint projects, including the supply of S-400 missile systems, licensed production of T-90 tanks and Su-30 MKI aircraft, and the joint development of BrahMos missiles.
The India-Russia military-technical relationship has evolved from a buyer-seller dynamic to one emphasizing joint research, development, and production of advanced defence technologies.
