Saab, the Swedish aerospace and defence company, has unveiled a full-scale replica of its Gripen E fighter jet in Bengaluru, signaling its strong interest in India's Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) tender.
Kent Åke Molin, Head of the Gripen for India Programme, emphasized Saab's commitment to not just selling aircraft, but to establishing a deep technological partnership with India.
Saab has been actively pursuing the MRFA contract since responding to the Indian government's Request for Information (RFI) in 2018. The Gripen E, with its advanced capabilities, is among eight contenders vying for this major deal, which could reshape India's air combat capabilities.
Molin highlighted Saab's comprehensive vision for India, going beyond just manufacturing. "We are looking at extremely heavy investments in India, not only for production but also for future reinvestments. We will be establishing fully Indian operations in India, by Indians, and also for export," he stated. This approach aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative, which aims to boost domestic defence production and reduce reliance on imports.
A key element of Saab's strategy is a deep level of technology transfer, which Molin emphasized is crucial for building long-term capabilities within India. "Our goal is not just to sell our products but to share technologies and capabilities, enabling the Indian defence sector to grow independently," he explained. This includes setting up local research and development centers, manufacturing facilities, and skill development programs to ensure that the Indian industry can not only produce but also innovate and upgrade these advanced systems.
The Gripen E, known for its versatility, low operational costs, and advanced sensor suite, could be a valuable asset for the Indian Air Force. Its design philosophy emphasizes network-centric warfare, where connectivity and information sharing are paramount, aligning well with the demands of modern combat.
By offering a comprehensive package that includes technology transfer, local production, and skill development, Saab is positioning the Gripen E as a strong contender for India's MRFA tender. This approach could be particularly appealing to India, as it seeks to enhance its defence capabilities while simultaneously boosting its domestic aerospace industry.
