Su-57 Felon and F-35 Lightning Captured Together at Aero India 2025, Showcases India's Pivotal Role in Global Defence Dynamics

An extraordinary photograph capturing the Russian Sukhoi Su-57 Felon and the American Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II in the same frame has taken social media by storm. This unprecedented image, widely circulated on platforms like X, marks the first instance of these fifth-generation fighter jets appearing together at an airshow.

The remarkable sight was witnessed at Aero India 2025, held in Bengaluru, offering a compelling display of cutting-edge military aviation technology from two global superpowers.

The viral photo, shared by countless aviation enthusiasts and experts, shows the two aircraft likely during a static display or taxiing maneuvers, highlighting their sleek designs and advanced aerodynamic features. The backdrop of the Indian sky adds a unique element to this rare encounter.

The simultaneous presence of the Su-57 and F-35 at Aero India underscores the complex geopolitical landscape. India, strategically positioned in the Indo-Pacific region and maintaining long-standing defence ties with both Russia and the United States, occupies a unique position to host such a display. This event not only serves as a platform for showcasing technological advancements but also subtly hints at India's diplomatic balancing act in its defence acquisitions.

Russia, with the Su-57, aims to reassert its influence in the global defence market, particularly in India, a traditional customer. The jet's appearance at Aero India follows discussions regarding potential sales and technology collaboration with India, especially after the country withdrew from an earlier joint development project for the Su-57.

Conversely, the U.S. decision to bring the F-35 to India emphasizes its intent to strengthen military ties with New Delhi, counterbalancing China's growing influence in the region. The F-35, which had previously appeared at Aero India, represents a significant opportunity for India to diversify its fleet with advanced Western technology.

As one X user aptly commented, "Two titans of the sky, sharing the stage in India, this is not just about technology; it's about geopolitics." This statement encapsulates the broader implications of the event, highlighting India's pivotal role in the global defence arena.

This display at Aero India 2025 signifies more than just a meeting of advanced fighter jets; it represents the convergence of international defence interests and underscores India's strategic importance in the evolving global order.

The difference between the two is the "offer." While the F-35 may be offered in flyaway condition, the Su-57 comes with a customized variant, local assembly and ecosystem, plus export opportunities. Overall, the US can't match the Russian offer. This Su-57 offer can put enough pressure on Dassault, who is unwilling to share ToT and start local production with local private players. Then these Western companies cry for defence ties with Bharat.

F 35 is the better of the 2 in terms of performance. SU57 is the most advanced Russian jet, not the most advanced jet in the world. Typical to russian jets, their engines and electronics have always been the backdrop in performance. Also stealth hasn't been much of a focus on SU57.

Russian Su-30 defeated Italian F-35 with its worst electronics. LoL

F-35 is just the most hyped.

When did that happen and who said that?
US removes references of such incidents from search; if it was the opposite, it would be another jewel in F-35 propaganda. Well, below are the details about the incident.

When a Su-30 Shot Down an F-35 almost.

A Russian Su-30SM fighter reportedly intercepted an Italian Air Force F-35 over the Baltic Sea, allegedly using its "Khibiny" electronic warfare system. This caused the F-35's detection and warning systems to malfunction, requiring the pilot to reboot them multiple times.

Details of the Encounter:The incident occurred while the Italian F-35 was participating in NATO's "air policing" mission to ensure the security of the Baltic region following Russia's special operation in Ukraine.

The interception happened because the F-35 approached a Russian An-12 military transport aircraft.

According to the Italian pilot, the Su-30SM appeared suddenly, and the F-35's systems failed repeatedly, necessitating reboots.

The Russian pilot's maneuvers were described as defiant, and at one point, the Su-30SM passed very close to the F-35, narrowly avoiding contact.

The Italian pilot felt fear and surprise at the Russian pilot's dangerous maneuvers.

The Italian pilot realized the Russian pilot was testing the capabilities of the F-35.

The F-35 is designed to operate within a NATO framework, relying heavily on interoperability with American air assets and data networks. This incompatibility would severely limit the F-35s effectiveness.

Now, in recent times, going for another 4th gen jet in MRFA does not make any sense. India should go for 2-3 squadrons of SU57/F35 whichever is available. I will prefer F35, then focus entirely on the indigenous program, especially on Tejas MK2 and AMCA. This is the best scenario right now. Now, someone will not sell F35 and it's not true. Trump is a businessman and he can do anything.

Yes Absolutely. There are basically 4 things it needs to be compatible with. If india can integrate them then its amazing option.

1) Ground Radar station
2) Air traffic controller
3) Awacs
4) Other planes.

Really a historic picture indeed. When NATO is in proxy war with Russia for the past three years, India has brought these two rivals in the same place.

Somehow it depicts the unique position of India where it can meaningfully pursue ties with both Russia and US at the same time.
