Tata Motors has significantly upgraded its WHAP 8×8 (Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform) armored vehicle, incorporating a cutting-edge 360-degree situational awareness radar system designed for counter-drone operations.

This enhancement is part of a contract to deliver 150 units to the Moroccan Armed Forces, marking a major step in Tata's growing presence in the North African defence market.

The integration of the counter-unmanned aircraft system (CUAS) radar addresses a critical need in modern warfare, where drones pose an increasing threat. The system provides comprehensive surveillance capabilities, allowing the WHAP 8×8 to effectively detect, track, and neutralize aerial threats, including small drones often used for reconnaissance or attacks.

While Tata has not yet disclosed the origin of the CUAS technology, its inclusion significantly boosts the vehicle's combat effectiveness in contemporary battlefields.

Beyond its drone-fighting capabilities, the WHAP 8×8 is a versatile platform that can be equipped with a range of weapon systems. These include remote-controlled weapon stations (RCWS), anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) launchers, and automatic grenade launchers, providing significant firepower.

The vehicle can also transport a fully equipped infantry squad, solidifying its role as an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

Designed for superior mobility, protection, and versatility, the WHAP 8×8 is well-suited for diverse operational environments. Although designed as an amphibious vehicle, the Moroccan variant appears to lack the rear-mounted pump jets, suggesting an adaptation to Morocco's specific terrain requirements.

This contract underscores Tata Motors' growing prominence in the global defence sector. The WHAP 8×8, developed in collaboration with India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has garnered attention for its adaptability and combat capabilities.

The Moroccan deal not only strengthens Tata's position in North Africa but also highlights India's increasing role in the international arms market.

This development follows a agreement between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Morocco to establish a local production facility for the WHAP 8×8 in Casablanca.

This initiative aims to bolster Morocco's domestic defence industry and potentially serve as a hub for exporting the vehicle to other African nations.
