The second India-UK 2+2 Foreign and Defence Dialogue concluded in New Delhi, strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations. The meeting, co-chaired by Indian and UK officials, saw significant progress on several fronts, including a notable development in defence cooperation.

The UK expressed strong support for Rolls-Royce's proposal to collaborate with India's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) on developing a 6th-generation jet engine for India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program.

India's ambitious AMCA project, a 5.5-generation stealth fighter jet program, requires a powerful 110kN class engine to meet its performance and stealth requirements. Rolls-Royce, a global leader in aviation propulsion systems, has proposed to co-develop this next-generation engine with India.

The UK's backing of Rolls-Royce's bid underscores the growing defence ties between the two countries. This potential partnership could provide India with access to cutting-edge propulsion technology crucial for future combat scenarios. For the UK, it represents an opportunity to deepen its defence cooperation with a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

This development is significant for several reasons:
  • Technological advancement: Co-developing a 6th-generation engine with Rolls-Royce would provide India with access to advanced technologies and expertise, accelerating the development of the AMCA program.
  • Boosting indigenous capabilities: The collaboration aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative, fostering domestic defence manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
  • Strengthening strategic partnership: The UK's support for this collaboration further solidifies the growing strategic partnership between India and the UK, particularly in the defence and security domains.
While the final decision on the engine partner for the AMCA program rests with India, the UK's endorsement of Rolls-Royce's bid adds momentum to this potential collaboration. It reflects a shared vision for enhanced defence cooperation and technological advancement between the two nations.

Today I saw GE India Head was speaking about adaptive cycle engine which GE is testing now. According to him both RR and Safran are 10 to 15,years behind GE, he was referring to GE XA 100 engine it seems. Regarding P&W I am not aware. if everything goes smooth we may get 110-120kn engine from GE, regarding Safran and RR I really don't know what they have with them offerer. As Safran has not developed snecma m88 - 3/4 and UK is happy with RR EJ 200 for their Euro fighter and F35 JSF from USA. As most of NATO countries have opted for F35JSF. Their plans are for 6th Generation fighter which is still decade and a half away. Regarding AMCA mk2 we may not get adaptive cycle engine but opt for proven engine with maximum TOT even chances IP rights looks bleak.

RR offer should not b linked with Tempest project second Bharat should Retain IPR plus Export Right & complete Eco-system of Engine components should b manufactured in Bharat by pvt players & not imported from UK. UK wants Bharat to Join Tempest project they should drop that from offer Bharat want pure Engine development partner, Morning it was GE who was also having to ofer fr AMCA Engine development without adaptive cycle Engine Hope at the End Bharat will choose Best deal But should happen without any delay only decade is in Hand engine has to b Ready for production before 2034 other wise it will impact on AMCA MK2 Time Line.

Actually RR already made a design of a 120-125 kn engine which is suitable for AMCA. So if collaboration with RR with all IPR then our engine will not take more than 5 years from contact

Safran is the only company who will give deep transfer of tech, RR or GE will hold back but latter have which Safran doesn't have

Could be based on the EJ200, their 120kn engine, which would be good. But the Eurojet consortium should offer the Typhoon with full ToT and the engine as well for the MRFA tender, which can make the long-lasting drama a bit more interesting. 😁

Be careful whom you trust. The devil lost a bit of control in US post this election but still they have strong hold in UK.So next 4 year till 2029 be careful what you deal with UK. They can pull the lever anytime and for gods sake dont sign this deal ever allowing UK FTA entry to india. Let them beg but RR cant be trusted this time.

Not a reliable partner. On the eyebrow of the west they will not share the core adaptive technology, and will make more change and ultimately make our resources & financially bankruptcy. What goes around that come around.

If RR is available for partial or complete sale, Indian government entities or private players like Tata or Bharat Forge , who already have a footprint in Europe should pick up stake. But collaboration or IPR is out of the question. Like they screwed France by AUKUS , they'll readily pull the plug if they have to coerce India

The best option is to make a deal with Safran as they never have any strings attached to any weapons or technology deals. Also doing such a critical project with RR can lead to problems if they come under pressure from the five eyes countries to delay or coerce us into doing something that benefits them rather than us.

So the best option is to pick Safran who is more independent and it doesn’t follow their foreign, economic or political policy on every matter. On top of that France is a reliable, genuine and a good friend to us in every way. They are the only country from the west that doesn’t mind sharing more advanced technology and weapons.

If the Eurotyphoon consortium need to offer full ToT's we will need to pay more because we are buying the whole tech or critical technology plus equipment that is being used.... And become part of the Eurotyphoon consortium member

The British won't part with their tech, nor will the Americans, all empty talks for misguiding India or throwing spanner on other avenues . India must not fall for these shrewd tactics .
