In a display of exceptional courage and skill, Squadron Leader Prathamesh D. Dongre of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was honored with the prestigious Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) on India's 76th Republic Day. This recognition stems from his remarkable handling of a near-fatal MiG-21 Bison malfunction during an operational mission on May 10, 2024.

Shortly after takeoff, Squadron Leader Dongre's aircraft suffered a critical Main Hydraulic Failure. This failure severely compromised the aircraft's flight control surfaces, including the flaps, ailerons, and landing gear – essential components for safe flight operations. The situation was further exacerbated by the extension of the intake cone, which restricted engine thrust and increased the risk of losing control, particularly during the critical landing phase.

Despite the life-threatening circumstances, Squadron Leader Dongre maintained remarkable composure. He made the crucial decision to abort the mission and prioritize the safe return of the aircraft and himself to base. This meant executing a challenging flapless landing, a procedure that necessitates a higher approach speed due to reduced lift, demanding exceptional piloting skills and nerves of steel.

Landing a MiG-21 Bison without flaps is notoriously difficult, significantly altering the aircraft's landing dynamics and requiring a longer runway for safe deceleration. Squadron Leader Dongre's successful execution of this emergency procedure under duress is a testament to his extensive training, unwavering courage, and rapid decision-making abilities.

The Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) bestowed upon Squadron Leader Dongre during the Republic Day celebrations recognizes his extraordinary display of gallantry, his ability to make critical decisions under immense pressure, and his masterful handling of a severely compromised aircraft. His actions exemplify the highest standards of the Indian Air Force, ensuring both the safety of the aircraft and upholding the honor of the service.
