India Seeks De-escalation, Crew Release in Calls with Israel, Iran

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in diplomatic calls with both Israel and Iran on Sunday, expressing concern over escalating tensions in the region.

Discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz focused on recent developments and India's desire for a peaceful resolution. A separate conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions and secure the release of 17 Indian crew members detained aboard a seized cargo ship.

In a social media post, Minister Jaishankar confirmed the conversation with his Israeli counterpart, stating, "Shared our concern at the developments yesterday. Discussed the larger regional situation. Agreed to stay in touch." This follows Iran's unprecedented direct attack on Israel, involving a barrage of drones and missiles launched towards the Jewish state.

Earlier in the day, Minister Jaishankar spoke with Iran's Foreign Minister to press for the release of the detained Indian sailors from the MSC Aries, a vessel seized by Iran near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials cited alleged ties to Israel as the reason for the ship's seizure. Both foreign ministers underscored the importance of avoiding further escalation and returning to diplomacy.

India is in contact with Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels in both Tehran and Delhi, seeking to ensure the safety and swift release of the Indian nationals.

India's diplomatic outreach to both nations highlights the country's active role in promoting regional stability amidst the volatile Israel-Iran conflict. The priority of securing the release of the detained Indian crew members demonstrates India's commitment to protecting its citizens caught in the crossfire.
