Adani Defence and Aerospace has firmly established its presence in the international ammunition market, securing substantial multi-year export orders for products manufactured at its state-of-the-art facility in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
This development positions India more prominently within the global defence supply chain, leveraging advanced manufacturing to meet rising international demand while maintaining capacity for national requirements.
The complex, inaugurated in February 2024, is notably one of the largest integrated ammunition manufacturing hubs in South Asia.
The facility is rapidly increasing its output of small arms ammunition. Currently capable of producing 150 million rounds annually, plans are underway to double this capacity to 300 million rounds by the conclusion of 2025. This expansion aligns with strong international interest, demonstrated by secured export contracts covering the next two years.
The plant manufactures various widely used small-calibre rounds, including 5.56x45mm, 7.62x51mm, and 9x19mm, suitable for rifles, carbines, and pistols employed by military and security forces globally.
Significant progress is also being made in the production of larger munitions. Adani Defence has commenced manufacturing 155mm artillery shells, starting with an annual capacity of 150,000 rounds. Reflecting global confidence in its production capabilities and competitive pricing, the company has already confirmed export orders for these shells spanning the next five years.
Importantly, one-third (33%) of this artillery production capacity has been reserved specifically to meet potential needs of the Indian armed forces, ensuring domestic supply readiness.
This focus on exports is timely, occurring as international conflicts, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, have significantly strained global ammunition stockpiles, leading nations to seek reliable new suppliers.
Adani Defence's ability to produce high-quality munitions efficiently and at scale, aided by modern automation and Industry 4.0 manufacturing standards ensuring precision, positions it advantageously to address this surge in demand. The company reports receiving consistent inquiries from international buyers.
While prioritizing export opportunities, Adani Defence and Aerospace reaffirms its dedication to India's goal of self-reliance ('Atmanirbhar Bharat') in the defence sector. The allocation of significant production capacity for domestic orders highlights its role as a potential strategic supplier to India's military forces.
Furthermore, the project represents a major economic contribution to Uttar Pradesh, involving investments exceeding ₹3,000 crore and the creation of thousands of jobs, bolstering the region's industrial base as part of the broader 'Make in India' initiative.
